Does anyone know anything about this race? I was looking at the flyer and couldn't find any race I could do. They have a bazillion masters categories but no cat 3, cat 2, or cat 1 races. They don't have a 30+ either. What's up with that?

Isn't that a Masters team? A big one at that.

I suppose it's the promoter's prerogative, whatever races they want to hold.

I'm just surprised. I would have thought they could have at least had a 30+ field considering they have a 80+ field...

They've always had P/1/2's and 3's in the past. I wonder if they cut those out, assuming they'd have low attendance, since Dana Point is the same weekend? I've always looked forward to and done pretty well at the Omnium. Due to a broken collarbone, I'll only be doing the TT in the M35's this year.

Two big reasons. It's the same weekend as Dana Point, so they probably expected very little participation from P12. Additionally, it's the district champs for older masters and Cal State San Marcos is holding collegiate races concurrently so they didn't have enough space for all categories.

You should come do Dana Point instead. Even though I was caught up in a crash on the final turn last year I'll be back again.

If that was the Cat 4 race, that crash is why I decided to never go to that race again. Staying in the top ten wheels helped me avoid the countless other crashes in that race, but that final one was at the very front of the pack.
FYI: Seperated shoulders hurt.

One of my buddies actually called them. They said they were trying to promote collegiate and age group racing. I bet dollars to doughnuts (or powerbars) that they will go back to having Elite Cats as well. I know a lot of people not going because of this.

Big mistake IMHO.

I wanted to do it because I missed out on Boulevard and Red Trolley. The least they could have done was have a 30+ category.

Seems like a cool race. Hopefully I will be racing again next season if my knees get fixed.

Did you see the PM I sent you a while back? I never heard from you.

Oh yeah, sorry about that. I hate PMs, I see them as emails but can't respond to them, and then I forget to respond when I am actually on bikeforums. Also responding to threads on my phone is not a big deal but it's a real hassle to respond to PMs. I'll see if I can dig it up...

Yeah, CAT 4. It was my last race in the 4s and I was working hard for a good result. I was somewhere around 10-15th. The initial crash happened in front of me about 3/4 through the turn. I hit the brakes and then I went down. When I replay it in my head I can't help but think that maybe I could have dove further to the inside and avoided it. But who knows. It happened so fast. I would love to have seen some video or pictures to see how it really played out.

This is one of the reasons I really like a helmet cam (or bar cam). My recollection of events seems to be slightly inaccurate. "I was about 10th spot" really means I was about 15th-20th. "I made a small move on the backstretch" - on reviewing the tape I spent most of the backstretch in the wind. Etc etc.

When I crashed last fall it was the first time I crashed seriously in my racing "career", 26 years. I hit my head and don't remember the couple seconds before I hit my head, including the actual fall. I actually had my helmet cam rig but declined to put it on. Had I put it on I think I'd have a much clearer picture of what happened.

Yeah, that is something I've become very good at. If I can count more than 5 heads ahead of me OR the group is NOT strung out single file THEN I'm at least 20 back. Or if it seems like 20 it's actually 35-40.

I actually have a GoPro that I've recorded a few races with. Maybe I should start using it again.
