Pushing yourself when riding alone

Other than a HRM, which is on the to-buy list, how do you push yourself to ride hard when riding by yourself?

go for PRs on well known routes.

if theyre long routes break them up into a few shorter ones that you can remember the splits so you can tell how youre doing before the very end.

dont go for a PR everytime, plan hard vs easy days.

its a start anyway

I just think about how if this was a group ride, I'd be getting dropped. Then I pick up the pace.

I like to chase/draft cars, and just imagine they're fast cyclists.

Except when chasing cars, I don't. I JRA most of the time. I think of it as steady state work.

Oh on steep hills I have to work so I don't fall over. Fear works wonders. Oh, if it's getting dark and I still have a long way to go and no lights, that's motivating. Usually this happens when I struggle on a long ride, like 5-6 hours, and I start thinking that in 2 hours it'll be dark and I'm about 2 hours away from home base.

Powermeter, HR, all that, don't do a thing for me because I just give up. Group rides and races motivate me. They're usually easier in between the hard bits.

I find that riding a familiar course and keeping track of times works well. There is motivation to beat your best time

Up beat music. Sorry please no don't listen to music while you ride arguments. When you train 6hrs alone, it gets pretty boring

For hard efforts, think about how much of a wussy you are compared to many other riders.

Think about how easy your pace would be for them.

Pretend that it's easy and that you love it.

Think about how If I ride hard enough that I can barely walk when I get home, I can't concentrate on homework and should therefore skip it.

I spend most of my time training solo. I find the following works - primarily the powermeter, but also timed climbs, chasing and passing other riders up the road, if they decide to wheel suck - enjoy working hard to drop them or at least make them suffer.

I imagine I'm off the front and being chased by riders just out of view. This is especially exciting when on twisty climbs.

I play the mental game. Most of it is making sure that my mind doesn't give up on me. As soon as that goes, the legs are soon to follow.

If I'm doing an out and back route I try to beat my split time on the way home.

My high school track coach said to me "what you put in is what you get out" and it's worked for me for decades.
