The 2010 Gila Thread

One week away. Form seems good. Even tougher field this year but eligible for the 50+ breakout. Anyone else going?

PSIMET Racing will be represented by Raviv (cat 4). If you see the kit, say hi, and check out his sexy wheels and sexy team bike.

I wanted to go this year but life and fitness got in the way. I'm going to try to shoot for it again next year.

If it were closer, I would go regardless of my fitness. But between a 15 hour each way drive and a two big projects due at work at the end of April, it's just not in the cards. Next year I'll schedule my projects around it

It's one of those races you don't do on a whim.

Noticed they are having a lot of 50+ races this year in NM, but not at Gila. The 40+ at Gila is a *****... too many ex pros and Cat1s driving the pace.

They've been going to more 50+ races in Texas too, I can do well in the 40+ and the team is mostly in that age group so I'm sticking there for a bit. Nice to know the 50+ is there though.

Last year Gila was blazingly fast; had a breakdown in form but managed 7th GC and 4th in the TT. Still dropped a minute plus to Carter. Would have been 2nd in the 50+ breakout but I'm still shooting for a good overall in the 40's.

Pretty much figure it's like an early 80's pro race.

It's a great race for someone with your ability. I raced there 3 times ~20 years ago as a Cat3 and was barely able to hang. Always loved it though... it's such a beautiful ordeal. Tried it again 3 years ago in the 40+ (my first year back after a long layoff) and it was pitiful... was overtrained when I got there and died a little farther each day... and was always OTB after the first big climb. I managed to finish, but got sick, and was barely able to function for two weeks afterward.

I'm trying to talk them into having a 4-day 40+ Cat 3,4,5 race next year, since their Cat 4,5 race tends to fill up. I think there would be a good response from us old guys who never were very good.

Looks like Lance, Levi, Tommy D. DZ, Pate, and McCartney will be racing. Hopefully I can avoid cramping this year; getting stepped on by fanboys and girls at the base of the Mongollon wasn't a fine moment.

Putting the last touches on the bikes today, and starting to load up the van.

Good luck... looks like a bigger than usual 40+ field this year, too.

I actually had a wild hair to take off and do, but I really can't afford to take a week off with such short notice. Planning on it next year though.

I'll be there in the 3's. I had a good run at it last year but cracked on the final hill. Been planning for this year's race ever since.

I saw. They did Bisbee this weekend. Pretty cool. Should I ask them if they know you?

Teammate came down with the stomach flu last night. He's going to give it a go.

Good luck Ex. Good timing that Vino attacks for a win since deep down I know he is still your role model.

Only his riding style. Hitting the sack in Silver City. Cat 1 climb at the end of 70 miles tomorrow. 8am start.

Stage hates me. 5 miles into a 5 day stage race and (can't think of the words here) launches to the center line from three rows over so he can ride 6th wheel because the pace is brisk. After we had a crash rolling out of town. Almost takes me out and I end up unclipped. Go to clip back in to find my cleat is "no mas". Great, I only spent two months prepping for this and the guy who will end up 53rd today hits my GC chances with a hammer. No way I can hang up the climb like this.

Rather angry. So I launched OTF with 71 miles to go, knowing there's no way I can hang on the climb with one foot, and figuring my teammates can salvage something. Two guys make the bridge around mile 35, two more around 50, they neutralize US because the Cat3's have caught our field, which is 4 minutes back. Much silliness ensues, we hit the bottom of the climb and a few guys who have escaped the mixed field nonsense catch us around 5 miles from the top. I finish around 10th with a big bruise and chips out of my ankle from the 100 or so times my foot came off the pedal. No idea on time gaps.

Oh. Well.
