He won the University Road Race last year by several minutes, just rode away from everyone. He lapped me I think 2 (long) laps before the rest of the field did. There was an informal mountain climb TT series here early in the year, and he broke his chain doing some openers warming up, hacked his chain back together, then won it by over a minute from second place, a cat 1 climber-type. I was about 8 minutes down, at almost an hour.

Not well--dropped and DNFed after lap 3. cold and rain like that spell doom for me. I cringed when I saw the weather report and the race was every bit as miserable as I was expecting. I saw your teammate come up the hill at the end, though, it was exciting. He was doing the work--that cal poly guy was just waiting to come around. Congrats to your guy, though. That was a hard race.

Danny flatted in the first lap. Got a neutral wheel but couldn't get back in. Saving it for the crit.
Pfaff was in the lead group and flatted with 1 1/2 laps to go. They were out of neutral wheels by the second lap, so he was pretty royally screwed.
I think a lot of people got screwed by flats...

Yeah. That was the crit practice on my "what do you practice...." thread. The UCSB team basically "puts it on" and they like all the local racers to come out so that it's more like a real race. I'm sure it's been going on longer than the UCSB team has been organizing it, but they have lap cards and their coach/advisor gives them a little clinic beforehand.

So what's the reason for all the DNFs? Max time cutoff rule or something else?
Nevermind. Saw the weather report.

Everyone who got popped in the first 3 laps just quit, basically. I wouldn't want to ride 35 miles alone in the rain either.
We went over the top of the hill on each lap with 10-15 guys, but it would usually grow back to 30-40 by the end of the long downhill.
Because I know all you power geeks love this stuff :
Power #'s for the climb from a teammate who weighs 3lbs more than me, and did each climb with me except the last one (he ended up a few minutes back on the last one)
1st time up: 4:48, 430w
2nd: 4:55, 418w
3rd: 4:35, 438w
4th 4:55, 426w
5th, he popped hard.
That's nearly 7w/kg (6.8 to be precise, for 430w) for about 5 minutes every lap, not including the rolling lead up to the climb. Hence only 10-15 guys over the top

Yeah...I noticed a few names in the DNF column that are crazy monsters.

Ouch. I can do those numbers for 5 minutes...but I weigh 50 lbs more. I need to go injure myself some more to get rid of some excess muscle.
That is awesome. Nice job.

I've got a big gap where a lot of my vastus lateralis use to be...I seem to be recovering fine without it. Perhaps a half lb weight reduction....49.5 left to go. What muscles don't I need for cycling?
Yeah, my max 5 minute was 450, but that only put me out to 5.3 w/kg too...not 6.8.

right, a report I can do that.
Course was a big loop, about 14 miles. At the top of the normal (5 minute) loop climb on the last lap, we continued going up the hill, so the climb on the final lap was about 10 minutes, with the last 500m at 15-20%. Ouch. Whole course was rolling, not a whole lot of flat to be found. Mid-way through was a nice kicker, must have been about 18%, lasted maybe 2 minutes. Enough to put some extra fatigue in the legs.
I started front row because of the conference ominum win. Glad I did, because it was a neutral roll down the big ass hill in the rain. Nobody had any brakes (carbon wheels + rain). I just sat behind the lead moto all the way down.
Super sketchy for the first lap, with 130 guys. I never let myself fall further back than about 20th wheel. A couple ******** attacks went off. One went off and got maybe 40 seconds.
First time up the climb - moved up, started it in about 10th wheel. Sat there while the guys up front hit the gas. 3/4 of the way up I moved up a little more, and actually found myself on the front. Kept the gas on up and over the top, we had about 30 guys left. By about 10 minutes later that was back up to 60-70ish. Nobody was really racing, except on the climbs, for the first two laps.
Third lap, guys started actually attacking on the climb rather than just going hard for the whole thing. Made it much more surge-tastic. I made sure to stay with the front group of 10-15, came over the top with that group. Again, we were back to maybe 50 a few minutes after the downhill.
Fourth lap, more attacks on the climb. Went over the top with 8 guys. Came back together to about 30. More attacks on the rolling stuff now, guys going off left and right. I covered a couple, bridged a couple, and made one of my own. Everything with a favorite in it came back, which sucked for me because the climb was really too long for me to hit it in a group of 30 and do really well.
Fifth lap, more of the same. Stayed up front, covered moves. A group of 6 got off, but we brought it back. FLC sent a bunch of attacks off, each covered by other favorites. With about 20 minutes left in the race, my teammate and a Cal Poly rolled off the front, got a little gap and just hit it. FLC, Davis, CU, all just looked at each other. I smiled to myself
They stayed away. I came into the final climb mid-pack and stayed there. At this point I was shivering pretty uncontrollably, legs were locked up with the cold. Salvaged a top 15. My other teammate ended up 24th.
We were 2nd in the team omnium for men's teams (well ahead of FLC, CU, Davis, etc), but 7th overall. Our women only got 13 points. We got 84. We need another killer day today if we want to go top 5 in the team omnium.
Looking back, I should have gone over the top in the 2nd group in some of the earlier laps and saved some juice. But I didn't know whether it would always come back together, and didn't want to get caught out. Tough calls to make mid-race.
Final climb. I'm not sure wtf kind of face I'm making, but it ain't pretty
