Racing in NYC (need advice)

So I just moved to the NYC area, but it seems like all the races are at like 6 in the morning. I have 2 CAT5 races that did in Boston and I really want to get to CAT4 so I can actually race in some of the real races that have no CAT5 field.

Are there any races that start at reasonable hours? I'd like to get to CAT4 by the end of this summer, but the way things are looking it's going to be impossible to get 8 more mass starts without waking up at 3 in the morning.

Why is racing in NYC so crazy? There are literally NO good options.

LOL!

Yea man, the races here are real early. NYC, you gotta be up at roughly 4:30am and I live 1 mile away! NJ is a bit more forgiving. Where exactly are you moving and maybe I can help you out more.

And real races that don't have Cat5? There's many strong guys out there who race cat5.

let me just say the following phrase because you tend to hear it a lot in NYC:

"I've got news for you"

(I do)

even living where I do sometimes I need to get up stupid early to race. I think it's just part of it, for all of us. If I want to do two races at Pocono I'll have to be on the road by 4:30

We wake up earlier for racing than we do for work around here bud. It's part of the lifestyle.

Go to the race the night before & get a cheap hotel room or sleep in your car.

or just keep partying all night, and before you know it, its 6am registration time.

the reason they race literally as soon as the sun is up, is because the public parks will soon be clogged with people, and this is the only remotely feasible way to make bike racing in the city work.

Living in Hoboken NJ w/ no car means Rockleigh is out.

Sometimes it's not about being a *****, but simply not being able to get there.

Maybe if I quit my job and become independently wealthy I can afford to take every Thursday off and ride in Rockleigh.

And what I meant about real races and CAT5 is that not all races even have a CAT5 field. I can't magically get to CAT4 and if 25% of races don't have CAT5 fields, that means 25% less potential races to get to CAT4

For all the people that actually took the time to post something useful, thanks! I'll look into the Floyd races on Tuesday. That might work.

Dude you can make it there in an hour on the bike from Boken. Unfortunately my season has been cut short or I'd be at Rockleigh every week. Great race that's very well put together.

Partner up with local racers in Hoboken. There are a bunch of guys there who, if you're not a clown, may help you with transportation issues.

Or look on the NJ side for later races. You're not going to get many races in NYC that are not at the crack of dawn. Personally, I like the early AM races in Brooklyn - done, home and showered in Central NJ by 9:15 am.

Dude, it's only a little bit over 20 miles from Hoboken to Rockleigh. There are people who regularly ride from Brooklyn. You can do it. Sure, it makes for a hard day, but it also makes for a good warmup.

for next year, remember that there are spring races at Branchbrook Park in NJ. There are also weekend races in NJ, probably ones you can ride to, definitely ones you can take a train to. Race at Floyd Bennet Field, and at least give one of the early-morning park races a shot - maybe you'll realize that waking up early isn't so bad (it give you an excuse to have a postrace beer and a nap, all before 11AM).
