I had a guy on my team race in the 4/5's. We had a guy that was racing against us (err...dominating us) this spring in the 4's show up and win the 3's. Monster.

Err...Gila. In reference to Gila.

I did the Gila. 9th overall in the 3's.

Worth mentioning is the guy who won the 3's wasn't a particularly good climber, but a good TTist that caught a lucky break on day 2. Still a monster, but couldn't have won a race like that without being smart about his breakaway.

.....and this somehow means he didn't win? Is not that good? I don't get it. Are we not supposed to race smart?

Sorry but I always find statements like this funny. He won. No one else did.

You don't win that race without throwing the dice at least once or twice. Sitting in won't get it.

Gila. 2nd in the 50's, 6th on the 40+, 2nd in the TT (first in the 50's if they were breaking it out). See the thread if you want the recap.

I think his comment was directed more towards his monsterness or monsterality if you will. Seems like he wanted to say that the winner-winner-chicken-dinner of the 3s, although a monster as pointed out, was also a smart racer and didn't win with his pure monstericity alone.

That's all I'm sayin.... I didn't win that's for sure. But this guy played to his strengths (TT-ing alone in 50mph headwinds) in a way that overcame his weakness (pure climbing). Of course he was a better racer than I (and everyone else) that week, and he seemed like a really decent guy on top of that.

Battenkill, M 50+, blew up on Juniper Swamp, felt like I was going to throw up for the next 50 miles. Other than that, it was a great way to spend $75.

Finally got a report on Gila. I forgot to mention Stacey Applewick (who won the womens 4 or 3 maybe) is from here as well and I was definitely trying to recruit her. Saw he this weekend. "congrats on your win!" "Oh, thanks!" kind of nonchalant.

Our guy's report:
"Dude...I have never been to a race were 4's and 5's were talking about when they were going pro and whether or not each had already signed a contract. It was stupid. All these kids from Colorado and the like who never race crits - only road races.

The race STARTS with a descent. I crashed less than 10 miles in. I got up and back on but only had 2 cogs I could shift to in the rear. So I had 4 gears for the rest of the series.

Right after the descent we start climbing. I'm doing 350W and I'm thinking - "OK boys...I can keep this up for a while but we've got like 60 more miles to go".

*skip to talking about the crit*

I'm running in good position but these guys are sketchy as hell. You can tell they never race crits. They can't take a corner at all. All of them are all over the place. My front wheel got clipped a couple of times and I'm thinking 'this is going to get ugly'. You have to finish the whole series if you want to come back so I'm thinking - I'm not wrecking in this mess. I backed up and sure enough WHAM! a bunch of guys went down. I had a blast."
