Today I rode my first "race" and I today I learned ...

Hi

I've lurked here for a long ass time (ass, see?), but this is my first post. I rode in my first "race" today, which, granted, was just a practice crit. Still, it taught me a whole lot!

Today I learned:

-nothing I thought I knew about myself as a cyclist has any bearing on racing
-I suck
-being at the back is terrible
-the inside is good
-pay attention all the friggin' time
-I didn't know much about pain after all
-being last might just hurt in ways that are worst than crashing
-that said, losing a bike race can still be heaps of fun (and by losing, I mean last)

Most importantly, I think today I learned that the lessons I am going to have to teach myself in order to become a better racer are surely going to make me better at everything else I do.

welcome.

question: why is "race" in quotes? Was it an actual race? Or was it an actual race for others but not necessarily for you (because, believe me, I've had those races too).

It's common to throw up the first time you do smack.

Good job (from another Canadian rider)...

I did my first crit 2 weeks ago now, and learnt just as much....
They are completely different from any other riding, i could place top 10 in a TT and come dead last in a crit under the same conditions.

I will be starting my practice crits this week, hopefully they pay off as i intend to see them do.

I put race in quotes for two reasons: 1) it was a practice crit and not a sanctioned race type thing (see how I have the lingo down so well already) and 2) it was indeed, more of a race for the rest of the field than it was for me. I was dead, frigging last. The good news (as I see it) is that this placing had more to do with lack of experience moving through the pack and a bit of inattention to positioning - both of myself and others - than it did with fitness. I mean, yes, I'm too fat and too slow but that wasn't the sole determining factor today.

Fun was had, lessons were learned and I'm bound and determined not to be DFL next week.

I nearly puked after my first race/sprint. Exhausted myself so badly that I could barely make it around the track and then had to lay down in the grass.

OP, welcome to the club.

Thanks for the welcome and the support! I'll likely be bugging you more experienced folks for some training advice as the season goes on. Reading your race reports and the training status thread has been quite the inspiration for me, thanks.

Congratulations, hello, and welcome! FWIW, I've been doing this for awhile now and I nearly puked on the Tuesday night hammerfest last night. Lemond was right: it never gets easier, you just go faster.

Can we fix the Title to :"Today I rode my first race and I learned..."

And make it a sticky? I think this would be nice for all the first timers to read what the experiences of others was.
