First Race!

Well, I did my first race last night. Figured I'd start a new thread since people like reading "first race" threads. 30 minute cat 4/5 crit. It was a local crit and it was a blast. From the reports about first races here, my focus was to stay on a wheel the whole time and not get dropped from the main pack.

I managed to hang pretty much in the middle of the pack for the first 20 minutes or so. I was pretty happy about my positioning and overall did better than I thought I would. Lap cards started going up at 7 laps to go. I was still with the main pack at 4 to go but then the pace picked up slighty. I started drifting back and was now in rubber band mode with the back of the main pack. On 3 to go, I was OTB of the main pack. I ended up finishing with a smaller second group that had been lapped. Some of these guys had been lapped twice. Overall, I was satisfied that, I wasn't lapped, had actually lapped a few guys, and stayed upright. There were about 60 starters. I know 60 total didn't finish (figure about 8-12 DNF). I lapped a few guys twice, so I figure my overall placing was about 40th-ish out of 60. Totally stoked! Looking forward to the next one.

Numbers:
Max HR 196
Average HR 187
Max speed 29.8 mph
Average speed 24.2 mph

Oh...and one final note is: I was pretty damn nervous throughout the day. Race started at 5:30 and from about lunchtime on, I could barely concentrate on work. I got there about 45 min. early, with plenty of time to register, warmup, etc. As soon as the gun went off, all the pre-race jitters went bye bye.

Awesome job! I can only assume this was the bear creek park crits, I was in your race last night, and it was really tough! Will you be at any of the other upcoming racers? It's always fun to meet up with BF members. I'll be at houston metro crit this saturday in the 4/5 race.

There was a crash on the last lap, so you might have been lucky to avoid that.
