Save me from making a BIG mistake!

OK - our area USAC upgrade coordinator was promoted again - a lot of you know him and he is a big guy on the national scene. He was replaced by a guy with a ton of background in the sport and a resume even more impressive.

So....as many of you know i kind of specialize in getting new riders into the sport and get them up through the ranks as quick as I can. Well....we have a ton of 5's now on my new team. The first one has gotten his 10 races this season after working diligently and spending a lot of money he doesn't have for entries to help accelerate the process.

He sent in his upgrade request after his 10 starts and was denied with the following response:

Originally Posted by New Upgrade Coordinator

no really.....

Not like we don't already have a hard enough time around here getting 5's a spot in the limited to 50 field sizes. If we kept 5's in the 5's for a year you would effectively cut this sport off to new entrants effectively for good. There hasn't been a 5's field that hasn't sold out or had a waiting list all season.

Now - what about the guys with talent? Will this be applied unilaterally? If so would my buddy the genetic freak from professional genes really have been held in the 5's until this last weekend.....BTW - this last weekend he finally came up with enough points to secure his 2 upgrade.....Maybe this guy will downgrade him to a 4 - where he "should be".

This makes no sense. I have contacted an official I know. I sent an informal letter expressing my concerns and stating that I would like to discuss this directly with the new guy before accusing him of having an agenda or publishing an open letter for the entire Chicago community.

Question - what are your takes? Am i totally off-base to be pissed? I will be a 4 forever so i am not worried about screwing my chances for an upgrade due to retaliation....should I unleash an internet barrage/campaign against this new "policy"?

Yes I understand that no matter what the rules say it is up to him.

Why am i so pissed?

Sounds like hooey.

Ask for clarification.. nicely.

From usac

"Road Upgrades
Guidelines and Notes by Category:

5-4: Experience in 10 mass start races.
Local Associations may also establish policies where upgrade credit is given for taking a sanctioned rider education clinic."

That is horse dung. I got my 10 cat 5 races in and the upgrade was happily confirmed. And I didn't even place in the top 20.

Oh.. what am I reading? He is going for cat2? Damn! Congrats to him! Should be interesting how he's going to do in a P1/2 field.

No. Friedman's first race was roughly a year ago, 2nd place Sunday got him the points he needs for his upgrade from 3->2

The rider in question has done 10 cat 5 races and wants to race as a 4.

This is most definitely a power trip.

I can even understand how our upgrade rep takes worst-case-scenario for everything and calculates how many 4s were in a specific 4/5 field to determine points - after all, that's in the rulebook. But the 5>4 upgrade is 10 races WITHIN 12 months. In fact our local message board had this clarified just yesterday: http://txbra.org/forum3/index.asp?pa...der&forumID=21 See the question from z, which is clarified by our association president Andrew Willis.

If your teammate got 10 races in 12 months, s/he should be upgraded no questions asked. This is how it's run all over the country. You're completely justified to be pissed about this and it would be best not to let this become standard procedure for your local association since it will turn many racers off of the sport.

The former guy gave me mine after 6 races...I'm so annoyed by this. The rider in question can't catch a damn break...

Have the rider send in the quoted portion of the rule book and also mention the lack of openings in the cat 5 races for new riders. If he doesn't upgrade him then go over his head.

One of the guys I ride with put in for an upgrade after 3 cat 5 races with 3 top 5s in large fields. The coordinator told him he couldn't upgrade him yet but if he got one or two more top 5 finishes they would do it.

UPDATE: The official I know that I queried about this responded immediately and agreed with me and said it would be looked into and if it is really that cut and dry then it would be resolved immediately in favor of the upgrade.

We have good people and they do a thankless job. This is why I wanted to get in touch with someone to clarify this before going ape-poop. I am so-far -glad I have waited to go nuclear.

I was upgraded from a 5 to 4 in only eight races. I had 3 wins and the rest top fives, but that shouldn't matter. they don't base a 5 to 4 upgrade on anything other than experience. He did his 10, that is all that is required. I would be pissed.

FWIW - for everyone else this rider is the one in my blog who hit a deer during the Iowa race, etc. He has really had bad luck.

Psimet, you should go crazy on the official anyways. This happens all the time in pro sports. The ref makes a bad call, the coach publicly berates them, then all the coach's players get pumped up. It's science. Then the coach gets fined 20 thousand dollars, of course, but it was totally worth it.

I know....that's why I am venting here instead of making an ass out of myself on local forums or on my blog. I totally agree and know that going off the hook never makes anything better....but it feels sooooooooo good.

....time to go back to taking a full pill instead of snapping them in half I guess.....the anger is back.

Exactly .... the official made a mistake ... point it out politely and privately .... give him a chance to fix it. If he becomes a jerk about it, then think about another way to handle it.

Here's where New Upgrade Coordinator 's logic falls apart. The guy has enough races in to qualify already. New Upgrade Coordinator wants him to have a full season in. Suppose the guy decides to sit on his ass for the rest of the year. Is he going to get the upgrade? Answer, yes...he'll have 10 races and a full season. No logic in not just giving it to him now.

Close your eyes.

Breath in slowly through your nose. (keep your eyes closed)

Exhale slowly though your mouth (keeping eyes shut)

Repeat 20 times (KEEP YOUR EYES SHUT!)

Good, that should be plenty of time for me to raid the shop fridge for a couple more beers.

You can open your eyes now. What? No, I didn't steal any deep dish rims! How dare you ask!
