Cadel is really killing himself right now. He'll descend better than Basso though--will it be enough to catch back on?

Europe is a bastion of economic progressivism. Race and gender politics... not so much.

And just for the record, I'm a feminist and probably wouldn't have any problem going through the motions of the ceremony. It's still tacky and sexist. But I would probably be uncomfortable trying to figure out how I got on a European stage race podium.

It's been a sweet race so far. To my surprise, I'm rooting for Evans, he's been showing some real grit in this race.

Basso is about to take the virtual leaders jersey. I can't decide whether Nibali will go and win the stage, or tow Basso as fast as possible to make sure they get the jersey. Probably the latter.

gadret has been touted as the next big thing in french cycling for a while. this is the first time that he's actually living up to it.

What European technology are they using to film bike racing in the rain? Can we get some of that over here in the USA?

I thought Evans was a better descender than this.

Did anyone see his face coming over the climb? Very white, very pale. I wonder if he needs more calories, or is getting hypothermic?

Cadel has the best suffer face on the pro tour, as far as I can tell. So it's always difficult to figure him out. After that near crash he seems to be picking up time again.

This is some of the most entertaining cycling I've watched in a long time. Poor basso though, all that work on the climb only to be outgunned on the descent.

he wasn't out gunned: he chose not to follow nibali's line.

That pink jersey group can't seem to decide whether it wants to catch Basso or whether they just want to make Arroyo suffer.

Wow, I had it on mute and didn't see the time checks until the end. That chase group lost a lot of time to Basso after that descent...even more than they lost on the long climb. Basso takes the pink.
