We all know Jens Voigt is the only clean cyclist. All those other guys have to dope just to keep up with Jens. Imagine how many TDF's Jens would have won if everyone was riding clean.

Someone went to a lot of trouble to imply a famous cyclist is using mechanical doping technologies..

$2700 seems pretty cheap compared to a year on drugs. https://dvice.com/archives/2009/05/gruber-assist-e.php

Very difficult to believe Basso is clean. The whole team seems to be over-achieving as well.

Liquigas has been a solid team over the last two seasons. This isn't out of the blue, Basso has been far more transparent with his blood values than...lets say...Lance for example...

BTW who would say should be winning this if Basso is cheating his way to pink? Cadel? His team is DOA...Arroyo? Lets be honest had he not got into the golden break he'd be minutes behind right now. Vino? Again his team is DOA. Basso and Nibali are not running away with this...Basso has had a steady and constant comeback Nibali has been rising for the last few years and had a break out season last year...this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone paying attention.

But fighting a doping penalty and failing, puts you on the sht-list with the UCI apparently.

Ok, that stuff with Lemond in the trial was pretty f'ed up...

Of course not... they've been doping all along.

It is somewhat refreshing to see that the *level* of doping appears to be less than in the past. The times on the uphill TT were significantly slower than the best ever, which I think was set by Simoni in his "prime".

In that Millar has a point...had Landis fessed up from the get go he'd be back in the sport, however Millar's real message was don't out the rest of us when you do it.

Pretty convincing! But wouldn't that loud whirring noise be something of a giveaway? And in the first alleged instance, his gear shift lever clearly seems to move. I think the motor is in his legs.

Yeah, and the decision to solicit money from his fans, and writing that book...although the book thing worked well for Lance, I guess.

EDR: do you think it's credible that Basso would do the Mortirolo faster this year than he did in 2006, when he was doping, if he's not doping now? I'm not saying it is or isn't, just asking.

Time up that climb at the same power could vary by minutes. Wind, temperature, motivation, placement in within the stage, etc.

yeah I bet he simply shifted. Or activated the NOS bottle he hides in his frame.

Out of interest, what are people's opinions on PEDs now in the peleton?

Are they:

a) Not there - the sport is now clean
b) A minor nussiance by a subset of riders
c) Used in the peleton, but only within the bounds of the rules (eg. EPO to get hemocrit levels to 49.5)
d) Widespread within the pro racing community, with some notable exceptions
e) Pro riders still use them just to be competitive - you are niaive if you think PEDs aren't everywhere in the tours

or

f) something else?

As an Aussie, I like to think the riders doing well are doing so clean - and my opinion is that they are doing so. My answer to the above would be somewhere between b) and c).

Cheers

Using EPO is not within the bounds of the rules. The HCT limit is a legacy of the 90's, before there was an EPO test. The rule was introduced to try and allow some measure of control over its use in blood doping in the absence of any ability to detect it directly.
