Historical Race Stats - Where to Find?

Hi all,

I'm very fortunate to ride on a regular basis with a bit of a legend; Ian Brown rides with our local shop club here in Eastern Ontario. Ian was a professional racer in the 50s, and has won far more races at the pro level than I have even entered at the 'hack' level! If you ask him casually how he likes riding on cobbles he'll say something like 'Oh, I love it. Roubaix is my favourite--I came 12th in 1953" or something along those lines. How many can say that!?

What I'm hoping is that someone knows of a website or other resource (that's relatively easily accessible, not a dusty book in some European library) to find 'palmares' of racers from that era? I think it would be a nice idea to do up a tribute to Ian, with a list of his accomplishments and present it to him as a gift (that, and just for interest sake!) Anyone know of any resources? Any hints are appreciated, even if it's just leads for individual races.

You can also find some info on the classics at cyclingfever.com
For example, you can find the top 25 finishers from Paris-Roubaix.

Excellent! That's exactly the type of resource I was hoping to find! Unfortunately, in a few minutes of searching I haven't found any results for Ian, just a list of the teams/years he raced. I will keep digging when I have a few more minutes. Anyone else have other places to look?

Cheers,

Darren

I spent some more time poking around on that site, and am still only able to find the listing of teams he was on from 55-59. Unfortunately, he doesn't show up on the 'palmares' list--hopefully that means it's incomplete, not that he doesn't have any!

I still need to look into the cyclingfever site to see if I can find anything there. However, I also found this site which gives a brief bio, and also suggests the book "Velo Gotha" to get further info. Does anyone have a copy that they could flip through for me? I don't see it on Google Books. Are there other similar books?

Here are two results I found for him
http://www.cyclingarchives.com/ritfi...php?ritid=7449
http://www.cyclingarchives.com/ritfi...p?ritid=111496
Oddly though - they do not list any results for him under his name.
