Passing a Teammate in the Sprint ?

A teammate suggested he held back a bit rather than pass me in the wide open, no team orders field sprint. I told him he should have gone as hard as he could and whatever happens happens. It seems to me that the one should go as hard as possible, unless there's a specific reason not to.

Did you win? If so, what's the point in him passing you? Team got a win either way.If not, yes he should have gone 100%.

Far more likely is that he did go 100% and couldn't pass you, though perhaps in his head he could.

I was 2nd, he ended up 4th, so I guess he didn't have enough gas to get 3rd. I passed a teammate who ended up 5th.

Then I would say my second statement is most likely correct.

"I could have passed you bro, but you know, I just decided not to..."

Heh. +1 on Ze's analysis.

I just watched (last night) Steegman's win over Boonen in a stage in the Tour. Steegman led out Boonen but Boonen couldn't come around. Unless the teammate is winning, I'd go. If the teammate isn't winning, the other team riders should try to win.

Nice job HB!

Go full speed no matter what unless there's some kind of time bonus that would affect GC and you're riding in support of the guy.

Do some character analysis and see if Ze's description fits. (Too bad if it does.)

heh! I wanted to mess with a teammate's head the other night on our weekly training ride. I led out the sprint and he passed me in the last 50m, later on I told him that I could have still sprinted. Which was true, but I would not have had anything left to out sprint him! I caved and told him I was just messing around. But it worked like a charm. Later on, as we were consuming age appropriate beverages at the conclusion of the ride, he looked at me and asked again if I was serious or not. I said, "maybe. Maybe not."

mind****!

seriously, it was just ball busting. We don't have "mental" pissing contests on our team (that I know of).

Please. I had a teammate who said that to me every time I beat him. I heard it a lot.

The only time he should let you get it is if a) it was for the win b) you had helped him to a win recently and he owed you one and c) there was no danger of another rider passing you. I think he's either rather confused about the etiquette of team dynamic or just didn't like you being faster than him.

Yes, New Britain. But I wasn't able to stay for the "real" race (45+). There's another one next month so I can try again.

Not sure about any mojo ... just lucky you weren't there to pip me at the line

I got passed by a teammate today. I even gave him a full bottle 50 miles into our RR, and the very last of my water at 78 miles in today. And he had the audacity to get 7th or 8th. Can you believe that guy?

Your teammate lies. If he could have, he would have.
