Trite upgrade question

I upgraded to category 4 after a few races, and I've been a cat 4 for two weeks. I've done 4 races as a cat 4, and I have 19 of the 20 upgrade points needed. Will any of the 4/5 or "A" races that I've done as a cat 5 count towards my cat 3 upgrade?

If so, why haven't I automatically been upgraded? I counted the cat 4 participants in each race I've done as a cat 5, and tallied up the upgrade points--30 points exactly. Could it be because some of the race results don't appear in my "Results and Rankings" on usacycling? The race organizer posted results on their website, but the results have yet to appear on usacycling's website.

No. You can't earn points as a cat 5, and your points reset to 0 every time you upgrade.

The "automatic" upgrade isn't really automatic. You won't get an email saying "you have been upgraded" as soon as you hit 30 points. It's more of a "if someone calls you out for winning everything in cat 4, they can force you to upgrade if you have more than 30 points" type of thing.

Also, the "Results and Rankings" section doesn't really mean much. You are responsible for maintaining your own resume for upgrade purposes.

Ah. Thank you.
So the "X points in 12 months" thing is really "X points in Y category in 12 months."

Yup.

Otherwise, wouldn't you be able to jump from cat 4 to cat 1 if you earned 50 points in 12 months?

Only if you were beating Cat 1s in each race
note that if the field contains mixed categories (i.e. cat 3-4), then the number of starters is the number of riders that are the same category or higher as the person requesting the upgrade (i.e. in a cat 3-4 combined field, all riders count for a 4 to 3 upgrade, but only the threes count for a 3 to 2 upgrade.)

In my experience, the 4-3 upgrade isn't really very adherent to the rules. There's a good chance you could just write an email showing your 19 points and get the upgrade, especially given the short time period you've been a 4. Or you could just wait a week apparently.. good job getting 19 points in 2 weeks. You must be racing well.

This really depends on the region. Here in TX none of my (cat4) 4/5 races counted toward my upgrade, even though a vast majority of the guys that were in the top 20 of those races were cat 4's. When I put in for my upgrade the first time I had nearly 30points, but after our rep did his math I had only 17. So I went to the next cat 3/4 crit and got a 3rd.

Our rep in WSBA-land counts 4/5 races for the 4->3 upgrade. (assuming you're a 4 that is)

Which makes sense since we don't have any real (USAC) 3/4's races, and not many 4's-only races to choose from.
