Do you all save your race numbers? I kind of assumed everyone did, until my GF decided to give me **** about it today. So is it narcissistic to think your children might someday find the numbers interesting, or normal?

I used a bunch of my old ones to re-cover an old messenger bag. I also cut them up for tire boots

Never done it. If you took the trouble to annontate them with results, summary of the race, it might make a nice scrapbook. But having thrown away 100 or more I'm not starting now.

My wife's been saving my Death Ride numbers. I'm not sure why- the first few were important to me (finishing it the first time was the hardest thing I've done) but after three or four it's not so big a deal.
But race numbers just go into a pile to be made into tire boots.

I have every one saved. I keep thinking that maybe someday I will find something cool to do with them. Probably not.

scroll down a little bit:

https://www.elevengear.us/windbreaker.html

I keep mine with date, race, result etc. Not sure why. Don't race enough that it's a problem.

My dad keeps all of mine and puts them up on the garage wall like people do with license plates. Unless the license plate thing is just an Indiana thing.

Save them all. Write results, participants, and a quick ride report on the back. Arrange them in chronological order. Viola! It's your race resume!

yeah, see. I write the event name on the back, date, finishing time, and place. I figure at worst, it will be a glump of paper that gets tossed out when I'm dead, at best, something of interest for family to keep.

thanks for the replies.

You bet I'm saving this one:

(won six-crit 4/5's omnium last month)

So you guys get a new # for every race? Most stage races here do that, but we use an annual # for the most part.

I have a few paper ones but those are mostly from fred rides.

I used to write the race and result, then I stopped caring. Now I have a butt-ton and throw them away when I think of it. Figured I would save them for sometime like my 1,000th wheel from PSIMET and using them to pack the wheel.

I write the date, the race and any placing, then throw them in a shoe box that I'm sure my wife will toss out on the way back from my funeral.

i used to, until i realized that i had a pile of numbers that i held on for no real reason so i tossed them.

you have to give your number back after races here, so these days it's not an option.

You hand the numbers back here too.

My wife keeps a scrap book of her marathon numbers and related stuff. It's pretty cool.

I have mine with brief notes (yes, brief, not just "cdr brief", like "8th, one attack, hot, small field, bad sprint"). I can look at numbers from 15-20-25 years ago and my notes will trigger a lot of that race's memories - weather, mood, frustrations, triumphs, etc.

It's also a visual reinforcement that I actually race. Some years I realize I haven't been racing much when I only have 10 numbers by June (and 6 or 7 came from Bethel, which for the new ones here, is a formerly 7 week and now 6 week series of races I promote and race in). This year I have a stack of numbers.

I also collect race winning envelopes (if applicable) but since I don't write on them, they're less of a memory trigger. In fact, some of them I don't know what happened until I find the appropriate race number.

Eventually I put them in my memorabilia box. When I'm looking for something in the basement I sometimes pull out a box and see what sort of stuff I'd forgotten about.
