we had 70 something guys! That's like twice normal.

Yes, 35+ Record. I mentioned that in the post about the first stage so I figured most people would make the connection. Sorry about any confusion. Either way, bad ass. This is a guy I ride with a lot and consider an awesome friend. It is great to see him do so well. Not only that, he has won two yrs in a row!

Yes very bad ass. He attacked with another guy (didnt look like teammate?) right at the start of the first climb, went flying past me pretty early on (started 5 min later). I kept waiting for the rest of the field but they literally never came. Maybe 1/3 up the second climb the next 35+ guy caught and passed me, but I caught him back and we worked together on the descent and the first few miles of the last climb until I couldn't sustain the pace anymore and dropped off. The 4th place guy didn't pass me until just before the end. The rest of the field never caught me.

You didn't happen to hear who won the 45+ did you? Was it Louie Amelburu? How about any of the other categories.

Good job finishing. Tough race. I don't know if I will do it next yr. If I can keep my power up at 149lbs, it might be in the cards. Funny, because I don't really consider this a full on climber's race. Seems like attrition is the biggest factor, climbing second. Would you agree?

EDIT: Just got a text that Louie won the 45+. Wow Vegas racers rocking it. 1st in the 35, 1st and 4th in the 45. I know we had a racer in the 4s that was in contention as well named Joe Chudyk. Real good climber and nice kid.

I think it favors someone who can motor all day vs someone who can go fast uphill. But that said, the winners usually have both going for them.

You mean 45+? I think it may have been him, he and another guy motored past me on the final climb. Big gap to anyone else.

Yeah, I tried to edit before you posted. He did win.

I think you are right on with your assessment. Thanks.

Case in point, local fast young guy and future teammate got second in the 4s. He's done one of the local climbs almost 10 minutes faster than I've ever been able to do it (low 40s vs. low 50s), but yesterday he didn't catch me over 7 hours with me having a 15 minute lead. Today over 5 hours he just caught me just at the end and we pretty much finished together. I'd say he's way faster than me but I have much better endurance.

Does anyone happen to know who won juniors? My brother, Benjamin crashed yesterday but was a beast today and we want to know who won because we don't know if the other junior finished.

My club had one JR entered (Kogon)... looks like he is the only official finisher.

He wasn't feeling well and didn't finish. Don't know the details but I think Eric talked with him.

Looking at the result, I was 11 seconds off 7th place in the GC (which would have been worth an extra $50), and about a minute off 6th. I'll bet one once less on my bike would have made a difference. Just interesting fodder for leightweight stuff making a difference in races. Should have gone with the carbon bars

Nice work umd - so how many points do you come away with?

Does this count as a stage race?

That's awesome. You got Garmin Connect or Strava for the race?

He gets one point for 6th place on Sunday. As there were less than 36 starters on day 1, he would have needed 5th place or higher for GC points. Perhaps a bunch of the 3s decided to do Masters this year instead, as there were a ridiculously large number of 45+ Masters compared to other years.

I thought RR's (assuming these are RRs) went up to top 9? So the field wasn't big enough for that?

Anyway, good work umd.

Damn!!! That is so close in a race with such big time differences. What kind of wheels did you ride? I would guess something with a profile of 40mm or lower under 1500grams would be a good choice. Man, I am kind of hot on doing this next yr if my season goes well. Plus I know these climbs like the back of my hand.

Vegas boys rocked it placing 1st 35+, 1st 45+, 4th 45+, 4th Cat IV, 4th or 5th but not sure in 35+. Great showing by Sin City!

I guess Mauricio beat 2nd place by over an hour! HUGE! His time was good enough for top 4 in the pro 1-2 I heard.

I'm using my DV46 rear/LEW front (replaced crashed DV46). It's about 1200g for the set. They are my lightest wheels and they are nice and fast for the descents.

My wife and I cracked pretty hard on Pine Creek. My garmin said 101 degrees, and there was no shade and big chunks of steady 8-9% grade.

I got really dehydrated, but could barely force anything (food/water/heed) into my mouth without feeling like I was going to vomit.

We threw in the towel somewhere on the final climb of Day 1. DNF.

Next year will be better.

Not that many started day 2. Well, there were only 15 day 2 finishers in the 3s, but more might have started. Umd emailed and asked for the official start count, in case he's supposed to get more points.
