Anyway, to get this somewhat back on topic, I was thinking about "looking back" while riding today. I do it frequently, and I have no problems with it, but some people do. I was talking about it with fauxto nick when he was visiting SB last week and he mentioned that someone had told him to put your chin to your shoulder when you look back and it will help with stability. I had never really thought about it before, but after that I noticed that's what I did. So, PSA to all you riders out there who have trouble looking back while riding, try putting your chin to your shoulder...

There are also other "tricks" to keeping a straight line while looking back, anyone else have any others they would like to share?

I see people look under their arms...Ive never been able to do that comfortably. I can look 'down and back', just beyond my rear wheel to see if someones there, otherwise I'll take a quick look over my shoulder.

Another good tip is to take your hand off the bar, put it behind you, and grab the back of your saddle. Once you can do that while still riding in a straight line it's very easy to turn your head without swerving.

I used to do the thing where I drift in the direction that I look back. I read somewhere to bend the opposite elbow slightly while looking back - ie, when looking over the left shoulder, bend the right elbow. It helped me quite a bit.

BTW - great thread. I'll be reading.

All good tips. My only additional suggestion is to practice, practice, practice. It helps if you can find a smooth, quiet road and practice this using the fog line as a guide. And practice drinking, eating, removing clothing while being smooth.

I do a variation of this. If I want to take a longer look over my left shoulder I bring my left arm to my chest at the same time. It feels like it balances the motion out and I continue in a straight line.

If I'm riding beside someone I put my hand on their shoulder. I've only once had someone freak out but that was a heads up as to whose wheel to avoid.

I felt like I was having an inverted heart attack today on the bike. I had a pain under my right clavicle, sharp, and it was radiating down my right arm. I also had sharp pain under my lowest right rib, kinda on the side. Both were made worse by heavy breathing.

anyone else had these? Getting off the bike and relaxing seemed to help and then I cruised home easy and it was gone by the time I got home. I don't think they're related because I've had the pain under the rib (same side, same spot) before, including a few days ago, without the clavicle one. I'd also had the clavicle one without the other before.

Update:

I'm guzzling the G2 on my rides. My headaches are almost totally gone. Hard to believe I was dehydrated before since I was drinking so much. Now the only downside is that I get a slushy feeling in my stomach from all that liquid.

Well, I'm glad your headaches are getting better! As for the slushy sloshy feeling, you probably don't need so much g2 on a 90 minute ride.. Try one bottle with some ice water and an electrolyte replacement and one bottle of sports drink, and see where that gets you. If you go for 3 bottles, you can put one in a jersey pocket, or just stop real quickly at a convenience store.

Full disclosure: tonight I drank a lot on my 2:15 ride. Basically 4 bottles worth: 1 bottle of dedicated athlete sports drink, 1.5 bottles of water (with endurolytes), and then a quart of G2 which I picked up at a store about half-way through the ride. But I was trying to push myself, for at least the first 90 minutes. With the dewpoint at 78, and the temps only in the upper 80s (89?), the HI was still around 99.

I haven't tried any of the tricks suggested, I just look back and hold my line. I managed to get used to it by thinking "straight line" when I would look back then it became second nature.

Chances are you are doing something with your body to maintain the balance. I never really thought about it until Nick mentioned that to me the other day. Next time you look back, think about what it is that you are actually doing to stabilize yourself and keep the balance.

I kinda tuck the chin and just barely rest my left hand on the bars so I don't steer (when looking left, reverse for right).

If I want to look for a long time (changing lanes in heavy traffic, for example) I'll take the left hand off the bars and put it on my hip and take my right hand up by the stem.

I've never been able to look under my arm and actually see much. I can tell if there's another rider right on my wheel, but I can't see cars or anything. Everything being upside down and small confuses me.
