A second bike is a luxury. I don't know what your budget is, or what you already have, but you will need the following at a bare minimum:
At least two full team kits
At least two sets of wheels with cassettes, preferably one a lighter race set
At least one road cassette with climbing gears
A top quality helmet
A good set of gloves
A high quality pump
A box of pins
At least two sets of tires plus tubes
A good set of glasses, preferably with changeable lenses or photochromic (my preference)
A spare derailleur hanger if your frame uses one
A slush fund for torn seats, bar tape, broken brifters, derailleurs, team kits, bent wheels, etc.
Depending on what you have, that can easily add up to the cost of a spare bike.

Having said that, I am buying another frame so I have two full bikes (primary bike has custom geometry so I want another like it). A second bike would make it easy to put a bike in the pits, or just bring along in case you damage your "crit" bike. When I had a primary/backup bike I brought the backup bike to important-to-me races for the wheel pit.

I have a Trek 1500 SLR with 105. For a while I was planning on selling it and upgrading to something nicer, but now that I've gotten into racing I'm debating if instead I should pick up an entry level bike for crits that won't demoralize me quite as much if it gets wrecked, and keep the Trek for road races.

Race what you have. If you crash, some stuff will get scratched, but equipment doesn't get destroyed that often. Parts can be replaced as needed.
You might not like racing anyway, so don't buy a 2nd bike yet. You don't "need" spare wheels either, but they're nice to have.

In the past, I had multiple race bikes as well as a fixed gear for winter work. The only one I would not race except for time trials had a full custom frame that would cost thousands to replace and take weeks to reproduce. IMO, any off the shelf bike is replaceable, albeit painfully and expensively. Your 1500 with 105 would be an entry level race bike by most people's standards. My Felt is as well. I have the crash replacement policy to fall back on if I need it.
If you can afford a second bike, go for it, as long as you have at least what's listed above. I am saving now for a second bike, but it will be a winter bike so I can keep the Felt on the trainer. DA 7900 chainrings are ridiculously expensive and I'm not going to chew them up in the winter muck.

I'm starting my race career next season, and there are a lot of crits around that I'm interested in. I'm not too keen on the idea of destroying my current bike, which seems to be a fair possibility in these cat5 races. At this level, will I be hurting myself by picking up a beater aluminum bike to start racing these crits on?
Used the difference to fund a used wired Powertap and replacement parts for my CX bike, too.

ended up getting a black A23 from here: https://www.prowheelbuilder.com/
They shipped fast and for only $7, (<$80 shipped) so I was happy. However, their website appears to be from 1990.
Laced with 24 spokes, 2x either side to a HOPE Ti Glide hub circa WWI (I have no idea how old it is, but it's cool).
I like the wide rim for my 32c CX tires. Didn't weigh it because I can't. Pics later, maybe?

The 41 has failed me. Trying here....
I just trashed my Trek frame. My friend's wife has offered his bike to me (he passed away from cancer) - Fuji SL1 with full SRAM Red on it.
Problem: he has a wired SRAM GXP SRM on the bike. I really want to keep my DA 7800 wireless SRM. Is the SRAM drivetrain/shifter etc compatible with the DA cranks? I realize I'll need a new BB but anything else won't work?
