Masters Nationals

OK, who's there, who are you cheering on, let's hear it!

We have 5 people there from our team (Velobrew). So far, Kent Lofton and Sharon Smith have placed 3rd mixed tandem TT (missed 1st by 24 seconds; sounds like a good field). Today was the 50+ RR but I haven't heard results yet.

Most of the men's RR age groups go tomorrow; we have 3 guys doing 35-39, 40-45, and 45-49. Also, the mixed tandem team will give the RR a go. Kent won this a couple of years ago with a different stoker, so I'd like to see him do it again.

Looking through the registrations is like a who's who of all of the fast guys I've been hearing about for years. I'd like to go in a couple of years and race 45-49 but I'll need to bring my game up significantly...

The riders I thought were going to be there didn't show up in the results from the TT which they both should have done well in.....so not sure if I am rooting for anyone at this point. Anyone know if Wayne Simon (50+) or Debbie Dust (35-39) is there? Debbie was planning on winning the TT this year after having placed 2nd the last 2 years (IIRC).

I saw the 55-59 mens from 5:30 to 7:30. It was a brutal race of attrition. Anderson, the same fellow who won the TT yesterday basically powered his way to the top of the podium, although the other podium finishers hung though until the last lap.

It was very very hot out there and I think the competitors felt subjected to harsh Darwinian factors over which they had no control.

The heat index was over a hundr

Are you drinking to quench the pain, thus the typos?

Kent placed 15th in the 50-54 RR, 5th Cat 2. I see Thurlow Rogers is kicking ass again, and Nico Toutenhoofd (or however you spell his name) must've had an off day in the TT.

Carl Grove is the man. 1st place Mens 80-84 TT with a time of 33:49. He would have been far from the bottom in any of the age groups.

I was expecting to see Powers there based on comments on TXBRA a while back. Don't see him in the results so I'm assuming he isn't there (he was also at Goatneck last week which is another indicator he wasn't going). Know why?

He races for Z-Motion out of S. Florida. He'll be easy to spot: he's the big guy wearing the national champ jersey from last year.

But, rumor has it that he isn't as fit as he was last summer...

a friend of mine won the jersey in the W50+ time trial. I wonder if she will be wearing it at GMSR.

I stopped my training about a month before Jr. Nationals in order to take on training pony duties. Then I spent a month in New Mexico/Colorado looking at my bike realizing I only ride it in Texas as a morphine drip to help deal with living in Texas. Long answer is, I'm moving back to Cat5 till I get my legs back. I only lasted 40 miles at the goat with the lead pack till I got shot out the back...sign of the times - no racing.

Roger would have won last year as well had he not gone off course on the finishing loop. The guy, literally, trains like a pro. 30+ hours a week. Perfect diet. For guys who wonder why some take the sport so seriously it's because we have to race against guys like this.

I rode my first Nationals on Wednesday and finished 29/49 starters in the 55-59 group. Standing in the gate and seeing many guys with National Champ stripes on their sleeves, then seeing at least three more with World Champ stripes is humbling. Hopefully I'll have a better day at the crit on Sunday since crits are more suited to my riding.
