Its in Compton? I guess I got spoiled by the Great Park Crit series.

Zmony 09-07-10 10:35 AM

I've heard the area referred to as Dominguez Hills. It's an industrial park that is well maintained and safe.

Yes, Dominguez Hills is right on the edge of Compton.

Garrett Garcia 09-08-10 01:15 PM

I'm planning on being at all 3 this year. Should be fun hopefully get some upgrade points.

Aerodee80 09-13-10 03:23 PM

Ill be there so I can get my ass kicked.

sdgrannygear 09-14-10 03:39 PM

anyone do the 4/5 race? Are those races typically that slow? It felt like a group ride with a sprint at the last straightaway.

This is comforting.

Group ride huh? So I guess that means I'm getting dropped lol.

A teammate of mine had a big rant the other day about CBR. Unorganized, inadequate preparation and medical response to accidents, etc.

Hi,

While CBR may not be the best (OK they aren't the best), they are certainly far from the worst. As far as I know and unfortunately experienced with a teammate in August, they have a certified EMT with supplies at races that Chris promotes. If you need more than that he gets the local emergency responders to the scene.

Regarding the unorganized perspective, most SCNCA races are less organized than CBR races. Registration runs MUCH more smoothly at CBR and the races run on schedule except when there is a serious crash. The Masters races at SCNCA events get shortened much more frequently to make up for late starts than at CBR.

I guess YMMV but that's my personal experience the past few years in SoCal.

Yes, I hear a lot of this. Chris seems to rub a lot of people the wrong way. I have no direct experience with him, but indirectly, I can certainly see that his particular style of brash and contentious would alienate folks. That said, competition is good.

I've never done a CBR race, but I like Chris's blog. I think providing competition to USAC is a good thing.

I might do some of these offseason crits to "build experience."

Chris is an ex-Marine drill sergeant. He's going to be what he's going to be. At the end of the day, he bends over backwards to put on races and to do things for racers. Brash, contentious, a blow-hard...yep, he's all those things. He's also the guy that'd give you the shirt off his back. Take the good with the bad. We'd all have a hell of a lot fewer races to run if he weren't around.

Registration, well that's Vera. THANK GOD FOR HER!

It's easy to complain about the races they put on, but honestly, I think they do a pretty good job (overall) for the limited everything that they have to do it with.

I just wish he would learn that how you communicate your message is as important as the content of your message. From today:

If you feel it is slow, go to the front and push the pace. It is only as fast as the guys in the front. If it really slow take a flyer.

Exactly. I love it when people complain about the speed of a race when all they do is sit on wheels. He was probably in the back yelling about it as well!

You're completely right, but it just ain't gonna happen. Chris is who he is and his feud with USA Cycling is bad for everyone. Having said that, the points that he made are all correct (from what I've seen). He's just making them in a manner that is not going to help the situation. I don't think he's capable of doing it any other way, really.

My teammate's issue stemmed from a crash where one guy was seriously injured and was laying out on the road for quite some time. I wasn't there, I don't know the details, but he felt that it was extrememly excessive and unlike the response at any other race he had been at. He said that eventually they just scooped the guy up and threw him in the back of some car to take him to the hospital. No EMTs, no emergency response, etc.

I appreciate what he is trying to do, but I don't really like crits that much anyway, so CBR or not doesn't really affect me much.

sdgrannygear 09-21-10 02:01 PM

If it weren't a "serious" injury, maybe a broken bone or less, I'd say take a car, ambulance rides are ridiculously expensive and I'm guessing if they have to use it, that's going to raise the insurance rates for him which trickles down to everyone else. If your friend had a head injury though, that's whole different story.

As far as the 4/5 race, I did get out in front and try to push the pace a few times but no one would follow me. I don't have enough horsepower to solo to the victory on my own for a lap or two. I just wish there were more attacks, no one wanted to do anything so they just sat in and waited for the sprint. Anyway, lesson learned, I will be attacking more often and hopefully finding someone trustworthy to help out with the break.
