>>So basically, today's 1's=yesteryears 2's?<<
I think it's more like there are more Cat 1's today, with wider range of riding talent in that group.
There are Cat 1's who are essentially Cat 2's with a good sprint, then there are Cat 1's who can ride and TT on what I consider to be a (domestic) pro level, in fact some of them are demonstrably faster (by virtue of their TT times for example) than many domestic pro riders. So that does encompass a rather broad range of ability. With the much larger membership in today's USA Cycling vs. the USCF in the mid 1990's, there would be a larger number of Cat 1 riders today.

Now you can get an upgrade based on a select few races/types of races (again, like me). I'm no Cat 4 in a road race (I've been dropped by them), maybe barely a Cat 5. TT? I'm a solid middling Cat 4 or Cat 5. But a crit... I can hold my own.

But there were plenty of good cat 2s that would beat up on the rest of the pack.

Throw the stick!!!!
My 2011 goal is simple, to get in good enough condition that I feel like entering a race.

Throw the stick!!!!
Entering a cat 3 race as a 220 pound slow poke wouldn't turn out well for me. Nothing positive to be gained from being dropped 100 yards from the start line.

Throw the stick!!!!
I am considering doing RAIN as well. I wanted to do it in the past but something with my racing schedule always screwed up my plans.

It's the only ride of it's type I've ever attempted so I have nothing to compare it to, but it seems like a boring route. I'll go back and finish this year, but I'm looking for mountain centuries in 2011. Climbing suits me.

Noticed some thread revival going on, so....
It took me some time to figure out and put together; but, some time away from home and the bike, and no work, helped me crystalize my 2011 goal/theme/raison d'etre: to be kickin' it old school. When I win, I'll be kickin' it old school. Just before I launch my sprints, I'll mutter kickin' it old school. If cdr lets me wear the cam for a race, I'll make sure this is audible before I slay the field in Bethel.

So? How did everyone make out?
I know the road season isn't quite done for some people but it's definitely winding down.

Enter a race
Get FTP back up to 355+
Get weight back down to 170
380 watt 20 minute interval (which means I need an ftp ~ 360)
Don't crash
Some people never learn.

I haven't posted here in forever but since I have some defined goals, I will share.
- create and adhere to a better training plan than last year. this is a big challenge as i've never beenspecially disciplined.
I did create a plan and stuck with it through the first half of the racing season. Midway through the season I started getting some coaching help and went with his program instead.
- go to the gym for weight training and yoga/pilates classes over the winter. i got injured as a result of muscle imbalances this year, do not want to repeat.
Never ended up going to the gym but I did do weights, core and flexibility work twice a week through the winter and spring.
- get my weight down to 145 from 155 (or at least keep it sub-150).
Only managed to hit 145 once for a couple days but I was consistently ~148 for most of the racing season.
- win some mother****ing races
FAIL. A 3rd, two 5ths and a sixth were the best I could pull out.
- upgrade to Master 2 (or Senior 3 if I change my mind about racing with the old guys)
FAIL. I managed only 6 of the 10 points necessary to upgrade. Will request the upgrade anyway. Fingers crossed.

Go from a cat 4 to a cat 2.
Race Tulsa Tough and Cascade stage race, as well as traveling more to do other races.
Weigh 145 all season.
Race in Europe.
Get on a good U23 team.
Become a better person and bike racer.
Get a win.

My 2011 goal is to throw a leg over that damn red bicycle hanging in my garage...that I bump my head on every now and then. I bet I can't ride more than a mile before I would bonk.Motivated? Not hardly. Maybe when it cools down some.

As for my weight, well, I'm leaner, but not any lighter.
