Next, Modbus; should be more fun than Fortran 77, eh?

I do miss OpenVMS (sometimes), but not eve editor...

Who amonst "us" has taken their vi addiction to other platform(s) via VIM?

waterrockets 10-27-10 06:39 AM

I've brought emacs around with me everywhere. I really enjoy elisp customizations. I made 1-player Mancala one time, but ended up losing it in my school crap.

My .exrc/.vimrc has come with me to about 8 different companies, along with a whole set of tools. But it's always been on some flavor of unix.

Modbus, now you're talking my language. If it's ancient and used in SCADA, I probably know something about it.

My main language is DNP3, but I've got some Modbus, some Landis&Gyr, some other ancient RTU proprietary protocols. I'm not yet at the point where I can interpret DNP3 hex in real time, but I know a guy who can.

it's refreshing to hear of people doing voluntary code reviews.

You should come work out here in the silicon forest - we do code reviews just about daily, as every checkin gets looked at. Then again I suppose that's not voluntary... but personally I love doing them, it's a great time to find bugs.

I'll bow out of the emacs vs vi "wars". Whatever. They are both pretty straightforward and easy to use.

I'm just glad that I don't have to do anything in Interleaf anymore. Using that to write technical papers with colleagues way back in the day that had DEC VAX machines and just had to do EVERY freakin' thing in Interleaf gave me a huge headache.

I used vi a lot in my college days, never understood why emacs was so popular, or why people cared what editor you use.

These days I use Visual Studio since I'm writing C#, and am addicted to the Intellisense feature (where symbol names just pop right up as you type).

Very little unix since school for me, glad vi(m) goes everywhere!

Flatballer, there's two dev openings at my work. We park our bikes inside.:p

It would be really cool if you could work with Lennard and hack up that frame after your tests so it's got more flex than anything else on the road, then run your tests again. I've posted questions to him about frame flex and power transfer in the past, and never heard anything back...

does using nano and pico make me a unix fred? :)

Flatballer 10-28-10 04:32 AM

Fallout: New Vegas is the buggiest game ever. Stay away. Seriously. And instead of patching the constant crashes and lag and studdering and game breaking quest glitches they patched mostly exploits...

in a single player game... who the hell cares if some guy has infinite money or life or something? Does it hurt my playing experience one iota?

Only if you run it in an xterm.

no hacking required, just build up one of these... flexiest frames ever.

Ergomo? BB based, but not sure if you can fit other cranks with that.

Flatballer 10-28-10 09:12 AM

my guess would be iBike. It's the only other legitimate one (Polar doesn't count, unless you just want to show how far off it is from a real PM).

slynkie 10-28-10 09:17 AM

or...a footbed prototype??

jwible 10-28-10 01:42 PM

So how do you make the background on a png file transparent without a good image/photo editor?

Is "gimp" too good?

waterrockets 10-28-10 01:59 PM

Paint.net is a little easier to pick up from first use than Gimp. Not nearly as powerful, but not bad at all. Just select the background with the magic wand, lower the threshold until it selects what you're looking for, then invert the selection. Then copy. Add a layer, and paste. Hide or delete the original layer and save as/flatten the png.

jwible 10-28-10 02:21 PM

Got gimp. set the Alpha channel to full transparency and "stamp! stamp! stamp!" the background is transparent.

jwible 10-28-10 02:36 PM

Working on a site in Joomla! Pretty straight forward too. But I have zero web design experience.

ridethecliche 10-28-10 02:37 PM

I work on a site using adobe dreamweaver.

I like GIMP, especially the color balancing/enhancing tools.
