You can put it on a USB drive. That's easier to carry around. Then use that to "boot" publicly available computers at hotels/motels, etc. A very nice feature.

i forgot the right log on to a remote server, and after three attempts, i can't log in anymore. No big deal, i thought. I'll just log off and log back in.
Next time i log in, i can't do anything on my computer and everything's locked. And after a restart, i can't even log in.
Apparently the failed login has somehow changed the registry value for the log in on my computer as well, and i was getting blocked as a result.
Thank goodness i was able to use safe mode to reset the registry values. Stupid windows 7. For a moment i thought i had a virus...

Here's where I whip out my "back in my day lecture"..
I just saw that Kingston's now advertising a 256gb USB flash drive. While 2tb drives are kind of cool in their own right, I really find flash drives of these capacities amazing.
My first hard drive was a monster of a 5.25" thing and came in at a whopping 20 megabytes. I had a few friends that could only afford the 5 and 10 megabyte shugart drives, but I managed to scrimp and save and get the 20 megabyte one. It was huge, weighed probably 10 pounds, was slow as snot, and made tons of noise.
Now I can get a device the size of a lipstick case that holds 10,000x the storage and is blazing fast. Friggin' amazing.
(BTW, I saw an article that mentioned some 1tb usb drives were demoed recently)

Just Moore's law. And an opportunity to pull out the "back in my day" card. Of course, I heard you used to use a slide rule and abacus, so you've got me whipped.

I actually own one of those HUGE classroom sliderules. I pulled it from a dumpster on campus in 1992. It is hanging on the wall in my in-laws' house.

Instead of training in the late afternoon I was on the phone with the guy that I was doing a lot of analytical software coding for as a consultant. I sent the stuff in mid-December and I hadn't heard a peep. I was beginning to think that my email was lost.
It turns out that he is just starting to use the stuff and had some questions. Once I explained how everything worked (it is in the comments in the code ... duh) he was tickled pink. Being a person that needs to do such calculations myself I made it very useful to the end user so that they could easily work the problems that they want to work instead of jumping through a bunch of hoops to get to where they wanted to go.
He is VERY pleased. He sounded almost giddy on the phone. It is like the software he always wanted to do his modeling has fallen into his lap.
Just wait until he uses the other applications I coded for him. Those are REALLY good. One of the algorithms used is unique and worthy of archival publication on its own, but I can't write that paper without clearance because that information belongs to them. I really thought of the solution algorithm in a dream and remembered it when I woke up.
So, no training today but it was a good day.

Major intellectual breakthrough with my 16 year old son. He finally understands what I have been telling time about thinking base-10 versus thinking base-2 (digital), or base-8 (octal), or base 16 (hex). Base-10 is for mouth breathers that add with their fingers. The other systems are more efficient. He now gets it.

Dude, when I was 16 the only things I was thinking about was how I was going to pay for car insurance, where I was going to be able to buy beer, and what chick was going to be my best shot at getting laid that weekend.

I could tell you stories, but not on line.
Spawn2 has a lot of the HS ladies "all upon" (if you get the Homestarrunner quote). I overheard Spawn1 trying to give him advice earlier this evening. Talk about the blind leading the blind.

Anyone here doing Project Euler or CodeChef? I've started Project Euler, and considering CodeChef. Right now writing in Java, but CodeChef is speed dependent, so I might learn C again as well. I learned it in college, so it shouldn't be too hard to relearn.
I'm starting to really like programming.

Genetics have failed me
I fiddled around with zoneminder today utilizing a logitech USB webcam. Works surprisingly well. Few kinks in the source code, but nice piece of software otherwise.
Great for building a very low cost surveillance and alarm system for your house/store.

I'm going to be brushing up on my sql quite a bit starting next week. I have to re-write an accounting system I wrote in a hurry a few years back, so I'm going to do it the correct way this time.
