ORC weekend, Orlando, FL Feb 19-20, 2011

I get a home town commute this weekend.

Saturday = circuit race on a 1.9 mile loop w/ two corners and an uphill finish (not steep).

Sunday = crit that has been used for years, lots of bunch sprints unless there is a crosswind, which is very rare. Tends to be a head/tail type day.

I'll be in the 45+ for sure each day. Not sure if, or what I'll double. Either 35+ or P12. Maybe I should triple? Team will want help in 35's, so who knows.

I'm not working the race, so don't look for me on mic.

Will Mollusk bring his 15yo? Will Ken babysit? Will teetopkram man-up a category?

See you out there,
Mike

Hey Mike - I'll unfortunately have to miss this weekend due to other commitments. Sucks cause I missed it last year and have heard great things about this course/race weekend.

And yes, I put in my upgrade request to Henry; perhaps you guys can twist his arm this weekend to get him to answer :-)

Good luck to everyone racing and stay safe!

I'm in.

Preemptive warning for those of you racing 45+: Keep tabs on the person who won the 3 race at Lake Mary the past two years.

Mark - glad to hear you are upgrading. No reason to stay in 4's. There are plenty of Career-3's, but staying anywhere below that is a recipe for complacency.

Saratoga - thanks for the heads up

There isn't much suffering at the Sunday race, unless you are attacking.
That race is notorious for being the simplest course in FL.
The only time breaks succeed is with crosswinds and that's not the case for this weekend.
Of course I don't know how far your sloth and gluttony have taken you this winter.

This is why I'm racing Sunday, not Saturday.

The hill before the S/F in the Sat course isn't bad at all. Or at least it wasn't last year

Look for me in an ASV kit for the 45's.
May double into the 35's to help my boys.

Any of you guys around this past weekend?
I had good legs both days in the 45+, but nothing to show for it.
That's okay, I'll definitely have "my" days throughout the season.
Did the announcing gig at the Sunday crit for WAM Events. Always a load of fun playing with the crowds.

Next up Webster Roubaix on Mar 5.
Glad next weekend if free, because I have a couple black tie events I need to attend.
Cannot just be a weekend warrior all the time, socializing needs must be met too.

I was with you in the 35s on Saturday, and then I did the 3's. I got caught behind the wheel crunching number in the final sprint in the 35's, lost momentum, lost lots of spots, finished 26th loser. The 3's, myself and Kurt turned ourselves inside out covering everything, but it came to a field sprint. I wound up behind the guy who sat up, hit his brakes, and slowed to 12mph half-way up the hill, and had nowhere to go so I think I was second from last, and probably uttered a few expletives.

Sunday -- Animal Kingdom with the god kids and another family. Keeping track of 7 kids and 5 adults was more challenging than any crit.

I didn't go. Instead I stayed up in Gainesville and rode the Doc Hollywood "bandit" race. Instead of paying $'s to get embarrassed I let Gary Yates, Kyle Rohan, et al do it for free.

*pasted from the results page*

ORC 4's. First race of the year. Felt good right away. I was relieved that my legs felt good because theyve been crap all week. After 20 min or so of sitting in we were heading into the cross/headwind, and I was bored and feeling spunky so I jumped. Got a decent gap, one guy bridged. I dont have the strenght to stay away, so I sat up, and slipped back into the top half of the field to recover. People started acting stupid with 2 laps to go and I was just trying to find good position, and got myself right around top 15-20 with a lap to go. Lots of bumping, and a nasty crash with a few hundred meters to go. Couldnt advance from there. Rolled in for 16/50. My fitness seems decent so it was a good day.
Sunday my motivation was a little zapped...tougher race than Sat. Basically pack fodder, pack finish, but a fast race and a good workout.

Mollusk - you know racing is not about paying to get embarrassed, it's about paying to play like a kid, then head back on Monday to ask the neighbors/co-workers/relatives what they did over the weekend. Probably something about eating hot dogs at the art fair and/or watching the latest Neckcar event.

Hammy56 - stop fighting for position when it is not needed, just relax, watch the "fight" head to one side of the ride, take ten strokes up the other and wham, you are in for the kill. The courses this weekend were so wide open, fighting for position was only needed for the actual sprint, or right before the crosswind/uphill on Sat. Anyway, glad you got to race.

For some reason the weekend I dislike the most (because of the course selections, not the actual event management, they do a great job), actually is one of the better attended events all year.
Probably something to with the non-technical nature of the race courses.

My response was "tongue in cheek". I could have gone to either event, but three of my team mates were putting on the Doc Hollywood and so being the good team mate I thought I should show the colors there.

And Gary and Kyle did put a major hurt on everyone right from the gun for a 70 mile "race" with 10 miles unpaved.
