Ris van Bethel Barcam

I just posted a barcam video from the Ris van Bethel cat 3/4 race. It's my first race vid, and I'm still learning how to make the best use of iMovie, so it's pretty amateur, especially compared to CDR's vids. I hope you enjoy it.

Go here to watch.

Nice. Seems like the guy brushing by you kinda pissed you off. You took off like a shot, like you were chasing him down. Anger trumps exhaustion, eh?

That was me. It was closer than it should have been and I apologize. I was bridging to the break. By the time I had a half a wheel on you, you slid right and pinched me into the curb. I had two choices, sit up and potentially cause a more dangerous situation or drive through.

I was thinking I needed to chase anyway, so that was just another good excuse to jump. ;)

No worries. If it had been a 5 race, there would have been carnage, but no blood, no foul.

Thanks, CDR!

Very nice, I enjoyed it, thanks for sharing!

I also like chasing down attacks. That's often my job in our local race series (especially because my teammates often get away) and it's always a fun thing to do.

Some feedback: you might consider adding a bit more commentary. One of my favorite things about CDR's videos are his little notes at the bottom--who's who, where the wind is coming from, how he's feeling, why he's doing what he's doing, etc.

Thanks! I'm playing with putting more feedback in the vids. I haven't been using iMovie as well as it can be used, and I'm still figuring out the tricks. When I tried to insert text in the middle of vids (as opposed to the beginning and end of clips), iMovie wanted to make the text visible for the entire clip instead of just a few seconds. I think I've figured out (with CDR's help) how to make it not do that.

With iMovie what you can do is drag the text box to the end of the clip (beginning or end). It'll default to 4s unless the clip is really short. Then you drag the text box (I think it's green?) to where you want to put it. Since I piece together a gazillion snippets, I have lots of beginnings/ends to drag to. A single clip would be tricky.

This works for titles and such too since they're just text boxes.

You can also edit the text length by editing the time to 4s or so, or whatever you want.

4s is default it seems. It's a bit long for short phrases, a bit short for long ones. I don't think I go over 5.5s, and short ones are as low as 0.1 - 0.2s.

As SOC observed (DocM knows him too), I spend a LOT of time on the clips. I spent pretty much every free moment on a week training/vacation trip editing one of my clips, one I'd already started, and I didn't finish (July 31 Rent I think, which SOC won). The recent HD ones, from 2010, end up taking me in the 20-25 hour range. I think I worked on the URT clip (the music one) for about 4-5 weeks, sometimes 5-6 hours a night, sometimes just an hour or two.

I actually catch a lot of flak offline for working on the clips so much. Doing a clip in reasonable time means ignoring everyone - my wife, friends, family, etc, as well as chores and such. This is one of the reasons why I have no clips from SoCal (race + really fun descents/rides) or the first two Bethels. Heck, I haven't even transferred the file off the camera from yesterday (and I think I forgot to charge the camera so I only got part of the race).

There's also something not very inspiring about a race where I don't finish. But yesterday's race has an interesting ending, if it came out.

Cool, wow, I made it into a video!! Shovelhd and I come into the pic at about 5:05; I'm center frame (white jersey) and he's just behind me and to the left. At 5:17, shovel tracks to the left of the yellow line and I go right; he passes me shortly after that and I come over to the left near him. Indeed, a good time and well run/organized event.

I don't spend nearly as much time--I don't have CDR's patience or meticulous nature. I probably spent an hour editing last night, and that's stretching it. I'll keep playing with it and I'll post more videos. On tap are next week's Bethel race and Battenkill, maybe Johnny Cake if I feel like taping it.
