as near as I can tell, I tried to do 20' intervals this morning with a heat index between 105-110 (95% relative humidity, 82F temp). No wonder that sucked.

Huh. I felt worse. My power faded on the 2nd and I nearly puked. I had to sit under the shade of a tree after for about 5 minutes to cool off, and I nearly called for a ride.

Bad juju all around.

A cool shower, and a cold smoothie later and I feel a lot better. But when I looked up the physics departments weather station hour by hour graph of the humidity, I vowed never to do that stupid stuff again.

One of my favorite sites to track storms --> https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/

Realtime offshore and near shore conditions.

Water temp in the gulf 87. Water temp on the Jersey Shore 73. I didn't realize the variation was that large.

I have decided that these sports leagues for kids now where the time in the game is equally managed and touches with the ball are tracked and time spent making sure no coach yells at anyone combined with all these cool names like "regional travel team", "House League", etc....is crap. I am so sick and tired of self important parents sticking their heads in where they don't belong. Personally I learned a helluva lot riding the bench when I was 9. Made me a great player when I was 10. Kind of in the same spirit of adult dodgeball leagues I would like to start a "traditional" kids sports league.

In this league it is a rarity if your parents actually show up to a game.
In this league the coach can bench you all season if you suck....and he can tell you that you suck.
In this league the winners get a giant ass trophy. Second place/first losers get a tiny trophy...as a team. A la Bad News Bears. Everyone else gets nothing and will like it.
In this league the motto will be, "Yeah you sure did try hard and we appreciate it, but you still lost. Try to be a winner next time."
In this league there will be no medals for "good effort".
In this league the season will be a strictly defined number of games. It will have a start and an end. There will be no "travel tournament" or additional series, or Fall and Spring versions of the same sport. It will have a start and and end and after that you will only think of next year.
In this league the uniforms will be team issue and handed down from year to year. Just like we had.

Sorry - but I learned a lot through having the opportunity to fail. I am sickened that kids today are not given that chance and that these sports seem designed to help the parents feel good than the kids. Have them play baseball for a couple of months then stop. Move on to something else....

Yeah - I keep hearing, "It will eventually happen." but sick of hearing that. I want to see it at age 9. I don't want to see my 5 year old on a soccer schedule with 2 practices a week and a game every saturday for 4 months with the option for travel teams and fall and spring versions, etc.......what a joke. I firmly believe these leagues are run and managed by people who have nothing in their lives other than their children and as such can't stand to see their kids fail.

Her CYO basketball teams had none of that. Tough coaching (I'm no pushover ), a strong inner-city league, single elimination tournament, one championship, no player awards.

They are rare.

Totally with you as well. Don't forget: In this league there will be 1 team stacked with all the best players. Your kid will not be on that team. You're kid will be happy if they can manage to score a few runs/goals on this team.

"In this league it is a rarity if your parents actually show up to a game." - One year my dad came to most of my games...but that was only because he was the coach. Other than that I considered myself lucky if my parents gave me a ride to a practice or game.

Has anyone ever done a study to see if all these "travel teams / all stars / little league world series " actually benefit the kids in any way? Other than helping your kid get onto the high school team do these kids go on to be recruited at a higher rate than kids who didn't participate in these teams? Do more of these kids make it to major league sports? How many even continue to play after high school?

Here's a book on the subject I can recommend. https://www.amazon.com/Revolution-Ble...4204527&sr=1-1

I was thinking about this the other day. My son loves soccer. He's good, but it's not like he's running circles around the other kids. I'm certainly not going to be betting on a scholarship.

It depends which sport and at what level. My daughter played AAU basketball for a season. I got to see the soft white underbelly of the beast. The bottom line is, the vast majority of kids getting college basketball scholarships play AAU ball. Tournaments are showcases for college coaches. Many of them are promoted listing the big name colleges scheduled to attend. AAU is a pay-to-play league. To be fair, the good teams have the best players and coaches, so there is a lot of value for your kid to play in this league whether they're recruiting material or not, but on the whole, it's a racket.
