Having been on your coach's side of the fence, there's a right way and a wrong way for a parent to approach a coach. You did it the right way.

In other kids coaching news, my daughter will get a new high school varsity basketball coach this year. This guy coached their boy's team for years to several regional championships. He was not offered the boy's job this year due to political reasons beyond his control, so he was offered the girl's job and refused. For the past two years my daughter has done skills work with him after the boy's practice, so she knows him and likes his coaching style (tough, no BS). She wrote him a nice letter telling him how much the team needed him, how much he could bring, and how hard they were willing to work. He changed his mind and will start next week. I'm proud of her for stepping up. Now if they could only find a couple of bigs.

Coach interperets it as not wanting to play or try hard (despite my early season quick mention that he needs to settle in), and gives him much less playing time than league rules say (should be 50% minimum, not 15-20%). With just a few subs, most kids play 90-100%. I'm not happy seeing things spiraling down. Talked to the coach, explained he's not getting enough time or support, and if coach isn't happy about the effort, then he should communicate, because nothing has been said up to this point, and 11 year old kids aren't mind readers. He agrees to let him play more.

Weekend out of town tournament, he plays a decent amount, scores 2 goals in the first game, and makes his penalty shot during the final tie breaker (lost anyway )... overall good so far.
This weekend, coach starts him, he scores a goal in the first half and plays decently overall. Starts 2nd half, scores 2 more goals for a hat-trick. Whew ... things are looking better.

Seems odd I had to get involved & tell the coach what to do, since I'm generally not inclined to meddle from the sidelines.

Good kid sports attitudes there. Nice to see.

My daughter's soccer team just lost their first game in two seasons. Top two defenders couldn't make it and they had a substitute coach who didn't couldn't match names and faces. At least now we know what it takes for them to lose one. I really hope that they are able to move them to a boy's schedule or play them up a year with girls next spring.

Andy is a professional mercenary. He's fairly old school. He races to make money. He'll make deals and put any name anywhere if it helps pay the bills. I don't hate him for his use. I also know for a fact that some of the people that moved up as a result of his suspension are personally guilty of exactly what Andy was caught for.

This actually brings up a good point. Let's say I have been presented the opportunity to possibly set up someone like Andy with wheels.....

The suspension/penalty was served, it was for a "recreational" drug - albeit on the banned list. I know more than a few pro riders do the same and are still staunchly anti-doping.... Discuss.... or I guess I start another thread.

Crater came down here and tore our legs off for the first few hammerfests of the 2011 season. He's a pretty nice guy, and I hold no grudge against him for smoking a doob, unless he was going for the Nathan's hot dog eating contest. It's the guys that are jacking their bodies up with stuff that really helps performance that piss me off.

FWIW - because of the nature of what he got caught for and the admitted prevalence in the domestic pro ranks, it has been suggested to me that he happened to piss someone off.

Yup. There are whole message boards for masters to learn how to dope & beat the tests.

Strikes me as silly to test amatuer athletes for non performance enhancing drugs. Given the extremely limited resources for drug testing, shouldn't they be concentrating those resources on things that give a competitive advantage?

That does seem very petty. There must be some political/social motive or perhaps it's simply mindless protocol.

At Masters Nats they tested most of the winners. Considering how Papp was shoveling EPO out the door to some of the pros who were aggressively tested but came up clean to get caught at a once a year post-race pee...that's like driving up to a DUI check point with a jug of cheap wine in you lap and throwing up as soon as you open the window.

Costs too much. Recreational drug tests are cheap.

Jokes aside... there's a reason that people with chronic pain diseases are advised to smoke pot. It's been shown to reduce or help manage pain. I think we can all understand how that would be useful in a bike race, yes?

I also don't care if somebody wants to get high, but in a racing context I think there's good reason for a ban.

I wonder what one of those severed heads in Mexico would think of the term "recreational drug".
