His book is pretty good. His prose is a touch on the flowery side but not so much so that it's a turn off (unlike some other well known cycling writers that cause me some major eye rolling sometimes).

rbart4506 - I have had some arthritis in my spine (and a bunch of other places) for years now. Nothing like an auto-immune disease to throw a monkey wrench into your 20's... but it can be manageable by taking loads of drugs all the time. Hopefully you get on a programme that sorts you out.

Oh, I did that survey. And yeah, it's not really a good one. Apparently we all buy all our bike stuff in one type of store, either online, in person, or, after some other choices, through "work or our team".

Anyone familiar with ductless A/C and heater systems ??
My wife thinks they might be good for zone cooling/heating.

Is that like a window unit? Because I hate those things.

No, these are more substantial units that are mounted on interior & exterior walls.

Well, it was a step down transformer and a couple of heavy duty caps. Still, with the service call, it was $480.

But that's a hell of a lot better than what we were fearing, so I'm considering myself as having dodged a bullet...

You mean like a mini-split, where the condenser, fan, and controls are inside, mounted on the wall or ceiling, and the compressor is outside? Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Sanyo, and others make them. We use them in small server rooms and network closets. They are expensive but they work well. Very quiet compared to a window air conditioner because the noisy compressor is outside away from the house.

Hosting some people at the house this evening.

Father (in CT)
CT Brother (2 yrs younger), wife, 3 sons
Maine Brother (7 yrs younger), wife, daughter, son
California Sister (10 yrs younger), husband, 2 sons
Plus the Missus and Junior.

Oldest kid is 9. We have almost no toys, and we only have one computer with Angry Birds on it. This should be interesting.

Set them up with a Netflix movie? In a pinch, every kid I know will watch the Phineas and Ferb movie. Hell, so would I.

But why did those things fry? Something made that happen.

Yesterday I went out and worked on the Cannondale. Got the mud out of the shifter (compressed air is a beautiful thing), wiped some other things down, bent the rear derailleur hanger back and got things shifting, inspected the wheels, frame, and fork. I'll check steerer tube and handlebar tomorrow.

One rail had pulled out of the back of my Aliante, it was impossible to get back in "as is" so 40 minutes or so later I had fully dissected the saddle. When the rail (it's one piece) was finally off it was pretty clear it's bent beyond prudent repair. New one should show up tomorrow. I hate breaking in a new saddle.

$150 plus $42 deductible plus $20 for the drugs. Cheap crash.

Yes, that sounds like it. (I'm still a little ignorant on the topic)

Nephew: "You don't have TV? You don't have games? What do you do for fun?"
Missus: "Um..."

It went well. Only some crying, one spontaneous strip down (niece undressed while standing on a chair, then put on her pjs), only a couple warnings, no time outs, and everyone kept entertained. Pizza, soda, water, milk, and, briefly, one cat.

No time for desert. We now have 36... okay we now have 32 ice cream cakes we need to finish. And 2.5 more pizzas.
