well i get to joined the stressed out and upset club

my work life, relationship life and cycling life are in a tumultuous way.

basically, i'm having to step up my game big time at work. What i've learned (after some negative feedback), is that this small company thing isn't a put in our 9-5, compelte your tasks and leave kinda place. I have plenty of tasks, but in addition I have bigger responsibilites and autonomy that I'm not used to and have been neglecting.

I've since snapped out of it and look forward to my role, as work is alot of how I define my self-worth and is the most important to me out of the three right now (work, bike girl).
The problem is i'm struggling to find balance, and i'm too stressed/upset all the time.
I might have to end one of the three as it is an all or nothing deal for my SO which is unfair to me, and it wont be pretty.

To add to it, some ****er stole one of my nicer road bikes yesterday when I was drunk eating mexican food. I had it leaned against my gf's bike at Rolbertos in Normal Heights after tuesday night track racing (spectating) and a few beers. I had my back turned to the window like a non-vigilant jackass and someone swooped it right up. My fault. Fortunately hers didn't get stolen.

RIP

probs put about 2500 USD into that bad boy over a couple years.

Needless to say racing is the last thing on my mind right now, however if I can get my **** together I am still looking forward to San Marcos, Ladera, Brentwood and mayb some Ontario to help my teammate snag the series.

/endrant

A friend/clubmate invested in an LBS and I guess it's doing o.k. He's somehow got permission to have a day of racing (12 races) at a local jail. It's a huge place with miles of closed roads. I think it will be a success.

sorry to hear about the bike, Thelonious.

Tmonk,

Can't help with work or girl stuff, but scour craigslist and tell the local shops what's up. Give them that picture and the bb serial number.

See if you can spread the pic to local riders.

If anyone sees it, they can alert you and the cops.

Good luck with the trifecta.

Sorry to hear about your stolen bike. But hey, its just a fawking bike. The rest? Well, thats just life and most youngsters like you are just learning the ropes of life. Add some kids, more work and life responsibilities and the fun will began.

BTW I was there last night too. First TNR. It was fun

TMonk,

There is a special place in hell for bike thieves. I suggest that you post the details of the bike, the where and when, so the locals on the board know what to keep their eye out for. It's not a foregone conclusion that will disappear forever. Give people a chance to help you out.

I am a one man IT shop in a small company that is growing like a weed. I know what you're going through with the work/home/riding/training/racing balance, and I have a wife and kids that have a whole host of issues. On top of that, I'm training for Masters Nats. It's a very rare week where I work less than 50 hours. Do you race crits? Do you know how you have to make a lot of quick, split second decisions, and if you lose focus, you miss the winning move? That's what it's like juggling all of this. You sound like you're just a little overwhelmed at the moment. Take a break, re-focus, and use those racing skills for everything in life.

Best of luck to you, man. I hope you get your bike back.

Yep, that was me. The C's are pretty easy as you have bunch of juniors and few F.O.S (fat.old.slow) guys like me

Sign up for the class, its fun. You may be surprised to find some fast(er) guys showing up for the class.

Hey TMonk, it will all work itself out.

I've struggled a bit with my job issues the last couple of years. I was on a pretty solid career trajectory, and I had been promoted to middle management fairly quickly - by my mid 20s, I had 8 full-time people reporting to me as well as several interns and contract employees. I really enjoyed that position, even if it meant I didn't get to ride as much as I wanted.

But my wife hated her job, and we moved. (At one point, I actually debated whether to keep my wife or my job. I chose my wife.) To stay in that industry I took a step back. It was a disaster. I was miserable. I had no upward mobility options at all, and my boss was a complete jerk. I eventually left, went into a slight different industry at a small but growing company. It seemed like there would be a lot of opportunity but the company was going through a lot of growing pains, and I became unsure of the company's future. I left after a year and am now in a government job.

It's great in the sense that I get plenty of time to ride, get a decent salary and benefits, and am limited to 40 hours a week, and I am actually working on bicycle related issues, which is nice. But from a career perspective, any upward mobility will be slow, which can be frustrating. I'm still fairly new at this position, but we will see where it goes.

i realize that i'm just in a transitional phase where I am trying to find balance. I also realize that I seem like a whiny ***** when you compare me to most grown men with families, established careers and real commitments .

I vote for ditching the girlfriend. If she's not willing to work with you to find a balance, and she's making it her, or the bike, choose the bike.

You know that was the first thing that popped out at me too. The rest of it was regular life, but this threw up red flags, flares, and a beacon signal.

It's hard to make work and anything else (like cycling) happen when you're getting flak at home for not spending enough time/energy/focus there. When you return home it ought to be a supportive safe haven where you recharge and recover. It shouldn't be something where you come home and it's negative. Granted, I'm sure there are days when it's negative, but on the whole it ought to be positive. For me, personally, I really dislike negative, and by keeping communication lines open, by being patient, I honestly don't remember the last time I came home to a negative environment. I'm sure it happened when I was in IT (1997-2007), when the job was killing me, but I can't remember specifically when (2004? 2003?).

Now, at the same time, I'm not riding much right now. I've been doing 0-4 hours on the bike each week since I don't know when, maybe for 8-10 months (except one 8 hr week). It's my choice, I know that I could push really hard and do maybe 4-6-8-10-12 hours, but it's not worth it to me. I've decided to take the long view and start thinking about racing a bit more committedly in 5-10 years. This is my 30th year racing and I think it's great fun, really enjoyable, but I'm no pro and I never will be. Therefore looking at some vague long term goal (like Masters stuff in 5 years) is perfectly fine. Short term stuff is whatever happens, so the crit in two Sundays, well, whatever happens happens.

This, combined with the Missus (who understands that cycling is part of the fabric that makes me me, as well as promoting, as well as BF and writing and stuff), gives me a solid base at home. I feel totally secure here, supported, safe.

Although I raced best when I was selfish (single, riding a gazillion hours a year, racing 2-3-4-5 times a week), I never qualified for a Cat 2 upgrade until I had a spectacular year that the Missus supported wholeheartedly. She went to every race I did (except a couple during tax season). Although technically I may have been faster and more cutthroat in 1992, 2010 was by far my best year racing overall, mainly because I had the Missus backing me up.

So... your sentence may not have been written totally accurately but if it was then I'd start with that subject. It's much easier tackling other things once you get your home feeling a bit more like a safe haven. A safe haven can be empty too, or have friends in it (not necessarily a SO).

Tmonk,

That part honestly jumped out at me too. I didn't want to say anything about it because I get flak for it here anddd I figured that someone else would chime in as well.

You're my age-ish. Things for us are very transitional with a lot of uncertainty about work, where we are going to be in a year, etc. It's unfair for someone to try to constrict you. At the same time, if it's all or nothing to her, it's unfair of you to drag it along if you're not in the same place.

You have a lot to think about, but someone being that possessive/needy/demanding/what have you does set off red flags. Something I now know about. hahaha.

I'm wishing you the best with whatever you decide.

Side note, you don't ride a 56 do you?
