Making a kilometer blurry
Just went into a burning house a couple streets over. I just happened to drive by right after it started, before the FD or cops got there. Quite the experience. Grandma and young teenage girl got out, possibly a pet or two left in, not sure. Crazy, crazy experience. Total loss, but as long as the people got out, that's an acceptable outcome.
Were you able to get your big brass balls back out?

Don't know who it was. If I did I would send them to Honor Court expecting an expulsion. And the publisher might want to pursue wire fraud.
The hotmail user name they used didn't match up in any obvious way with a student on the class roster. I will keep an eye out for emails from students to me during the semester, though. Students are so lax that they usually send me emails from their personal accounts instead of their school accounts. Maybe this person will make a misstep.

My parents, even though recently divorced, are still friends with the kids they grew up with. A few of them I refer to as Aunt and Uncle, though there are no relations. I feel like I was very much raised by a village, and if I mouthed off any number of people near me at the time would handle it. It was tough
And yeah, same thing. If I mouthed off, any number of people would call me on it.
And yup, they were all aunts and uncles and such.
Do you watch 50 videos/day? Or are you the 100 videos guy?
I can put stock in what is being said in the article. My boys are young but we are already trying to address some of these issues before they turn into problems. For a very simple example...greeting everyone when you enter someone's house. NFW that we will we allow our boys (2 & 5) to shirk that responsibility. Our kids usually handle such situations with ease while many of our neighbor's kids cower. It drives my wife and I nuts that the parents won't do something about it. It seems trivial but we don't agree. The tip of the iceberg has to begin somewhere.
FWIW, my wife grew up in a very tight community. Think of the term 'best friends' and insert 'families' in place of friends. That's how she grew up. Dozens of families are tied tightly through many generations. It's impressive....something I did not grow up with at all....something that I want to make sure my kids appreciate.

I think our sense of 'self' in the digital era is one of constant need for attention and it's like an ADD of different things. Intellectually, sexually, etc, all find easy instant gratification. Doesn't really make good for intimacy with friends or in relationships.
I'm not really sure exactly how it's affecting everything, but I think the speakers insight was pretty poignant and I found myself thinking about what he was saying and agreeing. It was strange.
I guess I'm of the generation that first rationalized the text message/IM breakup. Then 5-6 years later, it was the facebook breakup. I think that's pretty sad.

Heck I was raised in a small city but my mom knew enough people via the church it was hard to get away with much.
There was a seedy arcade that my mother forbid me to go into (in hindsight for good reason). One day I went into the arcade with a friend and played maybe two games then quickly left. Afterwards I went home and got in crap from my mom who had already been contacted by her network of spies. It was tough.

All they need to do is join a frat, which usually gains one access to solutions manuals, old tests, answers, etc.
At least that was the case at AU.

Starting a new temp position next week.
This one is a temp-to-hire contingent on my performance and their funding situation, as they are an early stage r&d company. They specialize in highly functionalized "custom" nanoparticles.
According to them, my time will be evenly split between routine benchtop lab assistant type stuff and research assistant type stuff.
The latter is supposed to entitle data interpretation (various spectra, size distributions, surface/zeta potentials, TEM imaging), and training to use the plethora of instruments they have there. That is the exciting part.
This position features a one-week "try before you buy" period where I will do a part time work week to see if we are a good fit for each other, which is new to me.
My interview contained a question and answer (both logistic and scientific) and even a lab practical section, where they had me prepare some gold nanoparticles by a simple formulation.
It involved heating water to boiling, adding a gold complex in the +3 oxidation state (HAuCL4) and reducing it with some citrate. They gave me some instructions that were purposefully vague and incomplete to see how I handled myself in the lab, and what kind of questions that I asked. I guess I passed.
Hopefully this goes well. I am taking a slight pay cut from my previous position (biotech formulations/soln mfg - blegh) and my commute is now 60 min instead of 15, but it should provide me with a much more stimulating and interesting work environment.
We'll see.

1) heated foil lagged beaker of water to boiling (50mL), with stirrer hotplate
2) add 1mL of 1% HAuCL4 soln, returned to boil. I used a 100-1000uL micropipette
3) add citrate (0.057g/5mL H2O, prepared with disposable pipette and analytical balance) "as quickly as possible"
I thought step #3 was weird. I had used a pipette gun to deliver the 5mL of h20 for the citrate solution previously and it had a very fast action to it. My initial inclination was just to dump the conical in there (which probs would have been fine), but since I was under supervision and the pipette gun was fast, it seemed more proper.
Part of the test was that I had to figure out that I needed to prepare the citrate solution before hand, as it was made available to me as dry sodium citrate. That would have been a little akward if I got to step #3 and was like "oh crap I need to make some citrate real fast..."

anyone have any experience with Champion Systems kits? The club I belong to is ordering from them and their sizing chart is a bit odd, plus I'm wondering if they're worth the expense.

they run small. I use size S bibs in pactimo/voler/a few others and my size S champ bibs are on the small size, enough so that I would prefer an M.
they aren't any more or less comfortable than any of the other brands i've used.
I do have a 1 kit left from the club/shop I rode for in college (graduated in december) that is nearly a year old. I'm trying to wear them out by riding them more than once a week, but the damned things are pretty tough.

Solutions manual for what? I don't know for sure what exactly you teach, so maybe that's the problem. Do you assign homework? When I was taking all my chem classes in college, we had the option of buying all our solutions manuals from the bookstore. They were very helpful and gave detailed answers to all the questions at the end of the chapters. But we didn't get homework, so it was up to us to use them if we wanted.

Girlfriend's gone for the weekend.
So I'm off to see an all day concert with a friend.
My back is killing me so appropriate painkillers have been packed. I hate it. I was doing so well (like 2 ibuprofen a day) till mid week last week when I had a HUGE flare up for no real reason...
In any event.
Today.

Had champsys 2 seasons ago. The tops ran small, the sleeves really tight. Crappy chamois. Subpar zippers. But they were inexpensive and had small minimums.

chamois = sandpaper.
Zippers on jackets tear out, our team had them for a two year run a few years ago and the guys still complain about them.
They are cheap & have low minimums - those seem to be the high points... seems unfortunate for stuff that you might wear with some frequency.
