Truth be told, I was looking for a chicken dish (btw, your influence from loseit) and the only thing I saw was the 1/2 chicken dish, which didn't appeal to me. If I had known about the Mae West, I would have ordered that. As for the ribs, they were dainty sized and only about 8 of them. For the record, I passed on dessert!! And, I had only one beer -- Guinness I proclaim to all. Breaking news: Jobs resigns from CEO position, and becomes chair.

Woah. CDR has an excuse, he's fueling up for the last race at the Rent on Tuesday night. BG's gonna get washed out at Wells on Sunday, so that makes him a dainty glutton.

I made the decision to do music before I knew I was doomed to be a pathetic ball sport player. My Dad was a great bass player and always encouraged me to do music, and I wanted to. In 7th grade I tried out for football but was so small I couldn't even run with the pads on. I figured I would stick with music at that point. In our school system you had to choose between band or sports when you entered 9th grade. Being it was TX, if you were talented at football or baseball, most kids chose those over band, that's just the way it was. I sucked at sports, so ditching music never crossed my mind. I'm glad I did do music, I enjoyed playing the trumpet through Jr College, where I met my wife (she was a flute player). I wish I would have stuck with it through college though, but got wrapped up in the fraternity thing instead. Sometimes I think of picking up a trumpet at a pawn shop and getting my chops back.

They were dainty buckets. Maybe the big yogurt container size. Appetizer part of the menu. But they were good.
I'll admit that I had an ice cream desert too.
The worst part was the drive back. I'm a bit of an arachnophobic (but I don't kill them, I just release them so they can eat mosquitoes) and a HUGE SPIDER (at least a foot across, if a foot was an inch) was crawling around my car on the way home. I drove leaning over the gear shift, the thing sitting just to the left of my head. I stopped (got off I95, then into a parking lot), blew the spider off the door frame outside, kept going. I didn't realize he landed in my door pocket - 15 minutes later he was crawling around again. I looked for him last night, this morning, can't find him. I think it'll die before it catches any more mosquitoes

I just ordered, after living in the house for a few years, a generator hook up cable. House is wired with transfer switch etc, and I have a generator sitting next to the hook up plug outside.
btw this means the power won't go out, unless the cable doesn't arrive tomorrow.

Locally, kids can play in-town "recreational" "everybody wins" soccer or try out for the inter-town travel teams. My 10 year old son got on the travel "B" team, but wanted to be on "A". He busted his butt all winter, with extra practice after the regular practice was over, and working on drills in the backyard, and had a big improvement and did get moved up to "A" for this coming season. So for him, I think the less coddled travel team has been a good thing, and he's learned a bit about hard work paying off.
I didn't even know about team sports as a kid, so I just rode my bike around the neighborhood, and shot baskets in our 8 foot high net over the garage. It was a bit of an adjustment playing basketball in gym ..... those baskets were so high !

I started writing up a training plan on my dry erase board. As I was filling in the calendar grid it occurred to me that August does not have 36 days in it. Oops.

Something like this is discussed in Nurture Shock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman (https://www.nurtureshock.com/). Basically when I was growing up it was all about the ego--praise, praise, praise for being smart, smart, smart. They studied two groups of kids--ones that were told "You are so smart" vs ones that were told "You must have really worked hard." What they found was that kids that were constantly told they were smart were less likely to tackle hard problems--if they didn't immediately grasp the concept they thought they weren't good at it and didn't want to try it any more. Kids that were praised for their ability to work hard on a problem were more likely to take the time and try to work through a harder problem--they tried harder and didn't give up.
Freakonomics also discusses some of this--why children of athletes often grow up to be athletes...I need to read that book.

What are your opinions of hired guns?
We have a strong masters guy who rides with/for us. I think he'll officially be on our team for 2012. Looking at his results he seems to switch around teams throughout the year. His results show about 4 different teams this year. It seems like he just rides for whoever gives him a jersey and pays his entry for some of these events.
What are your thoughts on this???? I'm starting to get stuff together to give to sponsors with current results, but I'm worried that this guy may not always represent our sponsors next year, especially at some of the big events.

Yeah, this stuff hits home. I have a second grader. Not saying "good job" to every little thing he does is hard. He was doing an online math thing the other night. I let him do it unsupervised. He rushed through and got a 56, then started playing a game. I asked him if he was happy with an F on the work. He said not really. I told him I wanted him to do it again. He did and focused. He pulled up from the 56 to 80 and was noticing his score kept getting higher. He looked at me and said he wasn't stopping until he got 100% right. It took him a while, but he did it. My response was a simple "how do you feel now?" He smiled. He was proud. He knew he did his work and I didn't need to give him praise.

This seems like an appropriate time to post a photo of my son's favorite book.

Assuming weather is dry and I go, I would leave suburbia at 3:45/4. Commuter rail has a few stops near me.

as much as I'd like to do the 2/3 race I imagine I'll do the 35+. the 2/3 would get me back to NJ around 8 and imagine it to be a sucky drive in torrential rain.

Why would the government cover up UFOs if they have evidence?
And what's with that guy's hair on "Ancient Aliens?"
