If you travel that much couplers may be worth it. Zinn's setup allows him to pack his bike without taking the stem off the steerer, the bars off the stem (the two things that take the longest to put together), and probably pack everything in a non-oversize case. You'll have to do a frame in Ti or steel though, stem as well.
I only fly a few round trips a year - I find Southwest's $50 each way fee to be a good compromise between airlines and bike fees. It's still a bit of money though.

I think all the shipping companies use similar conveyer roller setups.

We tried to get time with Lemond. Scott is one of the entry points to his calender; his agent is the other. Both seemed like really good guys.
I was wondering if Scott rode, and if he rode, how he rode. He automatically has pressure on him, being Lemond's son.

I've thought about a Ritchey breakaway, but those go for $1200, and I already had a spare bike, so I went with the shipping route. Southwest does have better than most fees, but the only airlines that fly out of where I live are Continental and American. Both have hefty oversized fees.
Not sure if you know any brazers around your area but a clapped out frame, cut up, couplers, that may be worth it.

Scott knows me as the guy that asked for an autograph then had three cameras that didn't work. Greg gave Scott his camera, then emailed Scott the pic so Scott could email it to me. When he saw me this year he almost laughed, like a "oh no it's this guy again" in a good way.

He was pretty much just another guy chugging along. He hung with us, we were doing more of a support function and riding with Greg to have him at the rest rest stops so people could get pics and autographs. Doesn't look like he's taking cycling too seriously, just enjoyed hanging out with his dad.

Now I see this clearly. My whole life is pointed in one direction. There never has been a choice for me. Listen, you ********, you screwheads. Here is a man who would not take it anymore. A man who stood up against the scum, the ****, the dogs, the filth, the ****. Here is a man who stood up.
I gotta get in shape. Too much sitting has ruined my body. Too much abuse has gone on for too long. From now on there will be 50 pushups each morning, 50 pullups. There will be no more pills, no more bad food, no more destroyers of my body. From now on will be total organization. Every muscle must be tight.

You know...studies have shown that dihydrogen-monoxide is a huge training aid. Injestion is a major part of professional cyclist's programs. Riding in the stuff is required to become 1's and 2's.
The team's end of the year party was tonight. The presenters, two teammates, were seriously funny (no surprise). I was honored to take home the most aggessive rider award. Throwing in the best colorado cyclist was icing on the cake. I am grateful for the efforts of my teammates. I took some spotlights that would not have been possible without them. Thank you. What a welcome intro to the sport!

Yes, his son was there. Both very nice people; he really enjoys talking to people in general and it's always fun to watch people's reaction when you tell them who that guy over there is.
Ride was a blast, other than having do to the first climb twice thanks to a mechanical issue on the new bike. Echelon puts on a top notch event...I had smoked salmon on my bagel.
Group took off with him down Kings Mountain Rd and pretty much did the Moto GP thing on the way down. Ended up being Greg, me and my teammate pretty far OTF. My parting words before we took off were "don't be the guy who takes Lemond out in one of the hairpins".

Being in the shop really made me want a Kirklee frame too. It's a total slobber fest in there.

There I was in P&R ready for some combat and I see Racer Ex and gsteinb are made mods. So which one of you gets to set the 41 straight?

I really found I didn't have time for it over there. Becoming a mod effectively ended my participation in the 41 after a couple weeks. Keeping up with the nonsense, trying to maintain my arguments/entertainment, searching for Trek threads to poop on, then trying to moderate, was all just too much.

Looking at that crack, I think Kirklee in Austin (along with Calfee, and probably Crumpton) would like a shot at fixing that. My friend and neighbor had an Opal repaired at Kirklee. Cracks similar to yours, but across both chainstays -- fixed and painted for $400 out the door. He's been riding it for two years since the repair, and it's perfect. Really great work there with a solid engineering approach for the original design of the frame, so you don't end up making some repaired piece too rigid for the joints that surround it, for instance.
Being in the shop really made me want a Kirklee frame too. It's a total slobber fest in there.

It's a circle jerk without a doubt though fitting since it mirrors politics in the real world.
those were enjoyable
