Ok...went and saw a cardiologist due to the tight chest & chest pain that have been keeping me off the bike a bit. Stress test - passed with flying colors. They didn't even get my heart rate up to the age formula max (171) and I know I've seen 182 in races. Hit a max of 168 (my LTHR is around 162-164). Doc said stress test 100% good.

Blood pressure is on the high side of ok though I always test high in the clinic. But still ok.

Cholesterol 173, 112 LDL & 51 HDL. Triglycerides 48. He wanted to put me on meds to get the LDL below 100 which I think is a bit overkill. Especially when I could eat a lot better than I do. Don't think the meds are necessary.

No heart issues found. Yet still my chest hurts on the left side. Especially when I breathe deeply. Still have dry cough. Need to figure out where to go next. Some possibilities I've found could be asthma, GERD, pleurisy, pneumonia and costochondritis. From the X-ray I had at walk in clinic they didn't think pneumonia or pleurisy. However, I think it may be time to see a pulmonologist. I do have some albuterol that was prescribed that didn't seem to be helping earlier on. Maybe I'll give that another shot for a little while. I really don't want this to continue. However, since my heart checked out I'm going to go ahead and hit the bike again more consistently and just kind of plow through this. However, my race season might be pretty much over before it started. Maybe I can hit a couple in August if I can do some intensity. We'll see.

Doper.

Seriously, best of luck to you with the surgery and recovery. I will miss your screaming for me at the races.

+1. I've spent the past 4 months chasing this breathing thing, thinking I had everything from asthma to cancer. It's been a huge pain in the ass, and at some point I was resigned to never racing again. Dealing with the doctors and the insurance is hugely frustrating and demoralizing, especially when you start thinking about the big-picture of all the crap you have to do every day, but just follow it one step at a time.

JKS -- do you have night sweats? For some reason they seem to go hand in hand with pneumonia. Have you done a lung function test? Any chance of a broken / displaced rib on that side? Generally hurts towards the back, but if you have one displaced at the sternum that would hurt.

GA -- what is the respiratory retraining regimen? I'd be curious to try some of those excercises.

rkwaki -- trackstand in a mini skirt with a hello kitty back pack while talking to the voices in your head. That would brighten my day.

and a tat like this.

JKS, have you been checked for having a rib out of alignment?

Added in edit: I'm too slow.

Now he's in a major practice. Not a bad gig at all. You get a hell of a deal for costs, and you are a commissioned officer.

Not really the epidemiology side of things, but the military does a lot of research into how to prevent or use bad germy thingys.

Personally, I think the military option would be a great resume bullet.
I had a buddy do this for dental school in the Navy.

First he spent a couple six-month tours as a dentist on an air craft carrier. Then he was sent down to Gitmo to be a dentist there.

I don't think he really enjoyed it.

jwible, I've only gone for the initial assessment, so I haven't started any of the actual exercises yet, but I'll let you know when I do. So far they just suggested that I start using this, which looks totally cheesy, but they said it would help to strengthen my inspiratory muscles: https://www.powerbreathe.com/

That looks similar to a device I used to use with my tutor when I played trombone. It had a little ping-pong ball in side that would raise and hover as you inhaled and exhaled. The object was to get it as high as you could and hold it steadily there for as long as possible.

one example of turtle sybolism in buddhism:
"Imagine that the whole earth was covered with water, and that a man were to throw a yoke with a hole in it into the water. Blown by the wind, that yoke would drift north, south, east and west. Now suppose that once in a hundred years a blind turtle were to rise to the surface. What would be the chances of that turtle putting his head through the hole in the yoke as he rose to the surface once in a hundred years?"
"It would be very unlikely, Lord."
"Well, it is just as unlikely that one will be born as a human being. It is just as unlikely that a Tathagata, a Noble One, a fully enlightened Buddha should appear in the world. And it is just as unlikely that the Dhamma and discipline of the Tathagata should be proclaimed. But now you have been born as a human being, a Tathagata has appeared and the Dhamma has been proclaimed. Therefore, strive to realize the Four Noble Truths." (S.V,456)
