Press release to your local paper?

Does anybody's team release their weekend race results to the local paper? If so, do you do a press release type thing, write it up yourself as a story or what if anything? I got thinking about this when the local paper did an article on some success our team had in the annual Ride Across Indiana (RAIN). Sure it's not a race but they do post a finishing list with times, therefore.. well you get the idea. As a club we do a lot of races and it would be good to get our sponsors names out there as much as possible as well as promote the team.

Newspapers... I remember those!

Seriously though, yes, our annual race gets good coverage from the local paper, front page pix, results etc. I don't know the exact PR process though, but I suspect that you could just email the sports or local editor with a short intro blurb.
