Sram s30 sprint wheel set. Questions/opinions/reviews/problems

Got a chance to get a set of sram s30 sprint wheelset for what I consider a descent price. I would like to know anything anyone knows about this wheelset. I do have a few questions though.

1) i want to use these for crit and road races only not training. are these gonna be good for that?

2) is there any outstanding issues with these wheels that would be a turn off from buying them?

3) putting a shimano casette on the aluminum hub, is that gonna work? i heard shimano casetes cut into those hubs easy.

4) i have also heard of problems with the derailer catching the spokes and needing a spacer on the cassette?

any other valuable info or reviews you have id like to hear them all before purchasing. I have been racing on my training wheels bontrage race they weight 1900g. so these should be more aero and lite correct?

No I said i borrowed a set of zipp 404 withthe aluminum braking area. they were super hard for me to spin up and seemed heavy. probally because they were 58 mm. I usually borrow the a.c 420 aeros from a team mate but couldnt cause he used them at six gap. I really like those. I'm hoping the srams will be close to the 420s. Yeah and I didnt race the 404s on saturday and stuck with my training wheels as they seemed to heavy.

Those seem more like training wheels. Alum, not really aero, light enough though. Maybe a good wheelset for rain. Front wheel for severe gusty wind.

If you have 404s (tubulars or clinchers?) they'd probably be better.

*edit nvm mind on the 404s*

I've won two sets of those. Well they're s30 front/s40 rear, not sure if that's the standard setup.

Anyway I like them, but I was on Open Pros before this so that's all I have to compare to. They feel stiffer, but they obviously aren't super aero... but I sure won't turn them down since they were free!

They are fine for crits, I won one on them. Fine for road races too, don't see any issues there. Hell I even did an partially off-road RR that featured softball-sized rocks in dirt and they withstood that just fine (no broken spokes, not out of true).

Also I have a shimano hub on there, no issues, no special spacing that I know of. I've only been using them for a few months now, but no complaints here. Actually there is one complaint.. I found it much harder to mount tires on these compared to open pros, with with practice and maybe a hairdryer you can get any tires on there you wish.

Hope this helps.

If you are worried about notching the freehub body get a set of American Classic "cassette clips". You have to call to get them, they don't list them on their web site. They're small steel shims that fit in the gaps of a Shimano 10sp DA or ultegra casstte and spread the force out. They won't work on Sram cassettes.

The sram 30 wheels seem to be overpriced for what they are- kinlin XR300s or similar rims on generic hubs. Spoke count is kind of low for durability too. You can get the same rims on hubs that are as good or better for less money from a custom builder like psimet or zen. They will probably weigh less as well.

+1 These work great, and they only cost (IIRC) $12

I got some at a big discount when they first came out. They have some serious flaws -

1) The rear hub is poorly designed and as a result can cause binding on the freehub (chain goes slack and drops on to your chainstay),

2) I've broken 3 spokes in my life. 2 on these wheels that have <1,000 miles (and they were completely rebuilt by a good shop after the first one).

3) The lacing was also poorly thought out. Straight pull on the drive side and one cross non-drive side means that they don't transfer power well (which is probably what causes the spokes to pop so regularly),

4) They're flexy as an olympic gymnast.

On the plus side though the hybrid-torodial rims are great, they hold speed very nicely (if you're looking for cheap TT wheels). Essentially the wheels just need 2 more spokes on the front and 4 more on the rear (at least) and a decent lacing pattern (I'm sure Psimet can chip in on spoke patterns).

I am solving the lacing pattern and hub problems by swapping the hub out for another laced two cross both sides. Hopefully they'll be OK wheels after that.

Oh and - 41

I can attest to this. While I haven't put the deraileur into the spokes yet, I can hear it rub when I'm in the lowest gear and out of the saddle.

Looks like my list wasn't long enough. Me too. I've worn the black off the inside of my Force derailleur cage.

To cut a long story short. They suck, buy some Fulcrum or Shimano (CL24) wheels.
