When you're fat and slow and spend most of your life in front of a computer gossiping about cycling or having a bit of a "coffee talk" over the truing stand - this is the part of the year that makes you salivate.

I am putting together some new deals for the next season. It's fun. I have been on this scene enough though to know how to do it without ruffling feathers. THAT's what makes it fun and challenging.

I have no team, so I have no drama. I'd trade a little of the latter for the former.

I'm "guest riding" for a local team. They asked for an intro. I'm sending them this:

First off, I want to say "you're welcome". Second, I'm not surprised all of you are willing to put aside any personal ambitions to work exclusively for me in 2012.

Some housekeeping:

I forgot my shoes at Punchbowl and had to race in my loafers. To keep this from happening again, I'd like everybody to bring an extra pair of shoes, size 43 (US 9.5 for those still not converted over to the metric system), with Look Keo cleats (gray). If you're already riding these in this size, please make sure to sanitize them after every ride should I need their use. I don't have the kind of ego that demands only new shoes, but I do demand good hygiene.

I like to get my replacement bottle before my other bottle is below 1/4 full, hand ups should be made on the left side only, with your gaze cast downward. I don't like to have my concentration broken by needless eye contact. Bottles should contain ONLY Fiji Water mixed 23:1 with Life Mel honey, and 0.25 grams of kosher sea salt. Please, no substitutes. I'm not a stickler on temperature, somewhere between 3-7 degrees Celsius is fine.

My coffee is taken black, Tuscan dark roast. If you don't have experience using a French Press, no worries. The first race is still months off giving you plenty of time to practice.

While I was offered jus primae noctis, I think the invocation of such can be detrimental to a good team spirit.

And as a goodwill gesture, I'll be providing a fresh towel for the person designated to clean my bike after each race.

Let me say how much you're all looking forward to racing with me next season, and I'm sure that only a few of you will be completely disappointing.

I might be in the same boat. I've been with this team for a while and it's a good group socially. Now the guys that I like racing with the most are moving and they have asked me to go as well. At the same time, the captain of the present team is interested in making me more of an influence on the present one.

WTF? I didn't race last year...not really. I was in surgery recovery mode until July-August and I'm just starting to get back to a good place.

I guess I'll just have to see what the new team has to offer. Right now, they have some really strong (and well known) riders, but I wouldn't really be racing with those guys, so does it even matter? However, if and when I get to the level of racing with them, they would be a stout group to mix it up with.

The guys that I would be racing with aren't really that serious about it on either team...so when I do race, I end up racing alone as often as not. I'm OK with that. It's not a 'serious' race team and I have a lot of other commitments, so I'm not as dependable as a 'real' race team actually needs. I'll probably stay put 'just because', but who knows.

Shouldn't entertainment be easier than this?

Make a list of all of the things that matter to you vis-a-vis bike racing.

Rank order them. Put weighting factors on each one from 5 to 1. "5" is hugely important and "1" is "meh".

Assess the impact of moving teams versus staying put for each item. The simplest way is +1, -1, 0 for "good move", "bad move", "no difference". Feel free to use fractions if appropriate.

Multiply the first component with the second and add up the numbers.

Choose the one with the bigger number.

If both numbers are negative then quit bike racing.

Getting a nice bike for free, entry fees covered

1) Getting a nice bike for free (weight of 5), 2) Entry fees covered (weight of 3.14159)

-1 -1

(Uh, I don't like where this is going; I'm stopping here.)

I'm probably staying on the same team as I've been one. But I'm staying in Baltimore this summer so it'll basically be like I'm riding unattached.
