Good source for bulk maltodextrin?

The main ingredient in my homebrew endurance drink is maltodextrin. I've been buying NOW Carbo Gain but I'm pretty sure I'm paying a huge premium for the label, and with base training in full force I'm going through the stuff like crazy.

Anybody have a good source for buying generic MD in bulk? I can get 50 lbs at Honeyville Grain but I'm reluctant to pony up for something of unknown quality. If you have first-hand experience with something I'd like to hear it.

Thanks, I'm not having trouble with suppliers. I'm interested in what other BFs have had good luck with. Oftentimes the powders are not quite as 100% pure as advertised, or they don't dissolve well.

you might try searching the training thread, I seem to recall someone (possibly kensuf) who was mixing their own stuff...there has been some discussion somewhere. I copied the link because I was curious, and I thought you were looking for price points, there was obviously tons...

Here's a really good supplier.

They have the pure maltodextrin, but I make my own out of their CarboLean product which is a mix of waxy maize, maltodextrin and dextrose. I use this stuff and a Hammer electrolyte tab. It has very little flavor and isn't overly sweet, which I don't care for.

If cost is the main factor brewing supply shops will probably be the cheapest, but as you noted it may not be as refined as you would like.

You can probably get it with hop extract in it already.

I got mine from Honeyville and it's been great. I sold off a lot of it for $1/lb just because I had so much and I avoid sports nutrition most of the time. It's well worth the price. Everyone I sold it to was happy with it too.

Only if you're buying malt extract. Maltodextrin will come just as that, ya clown. Now, should we contemplate the pluses and minuses of a barley malt extract energy drink? I'd rather have it for recovery, I think.

I get mine from Honeyville Grain as well. Fortunately, they have a distribution warehouse in my area and I can get a 50# bag of good quality malto for about $28.

yah that thought crossed my mind... how long are these base rides that you need energy drink? and what kind of pace, that a banana won't work?

anyway, sorry for the tangent. I don't always use bulk maltodextrin, but when I do, here's my recipe:

teaspoon (2.5 g) baking soda
teaspoon (2.5 g) table salt
teaspoon (1.25 g) salt substitute (potassium-based), such as Lite Salt or Morton Salt Substitute
2 tablespoons (30 g) sugar, or, maltodextrin based on hours / calories needed. I also use Orange Juice for flavor.

Mix in a big bottle.

Define base. 5+ hours on water and I see visions of dancing PB&J sandwiches down the road at about 4 hours. I have to use maltodextrin or else pack along some nasty gels.

Ya, this is me. I'm good up to 2 hours on water. Usually, if I'm planning on being out more than 1 1/2 hours I take some sort of carb drink. I try to do a lot of 4+ hour rides on weekends, and I gotta have something in my belly on those.

I only use sports drinks for 3+ hr rides, and even then only if it's a race or hard training ride. That's why I ended up with so much extra and sold most of it off. For the price of two pounds of HEED, I could buy 50 pounds of malto. All sports nutrition is WAY overpriced, most of which goes to marketing.

My secret recipe used to be very scientific and measured. Now it's 2-4 tbsp malto (depending on how concentrated I want it), a few sprinkles of salt, and 1/2 tsp of sugar-free flavoring like crystal light.

Most of the time my ride nutrition consists of a banana or apple and water.

Base depends on ride duration. It's going to be <= 70% though. At that burn rate, I can keep up with the burn by eating. PB&J is one of the many things that would pack my pockets. My bottles would be packed with water though, unless I need quicker energy for some reason (which I don't during base).
