Junior Racing Crank Restrictions

Hi everybody,
I am looking to get into bike racing this next season
I am going to be 17 years old and I know that there are gear restrictions for junior racing
My bike's largest gear is 50x11 and I was wondering if that fits into the restrictions
the USAC site says that 52X14 is the largest ratio that can be used, but i don't know how that translates to a 50 notch gear.
Thanks

Here's the rule.

With a 50, you can't have anything smaller than a 14 on there. Use Sheldon's (RIP) calculator, set to meters development with your tire size. Anything more than 7.93m is no good.

Have fun next season, and post up with questions and developments. Lurk around here and learn from it too.

There are set screws on your derailleur.

Yes. Blocking off the gears like that is good enough for local events but for nationals you'll need to run junior gears. Using junior gears now will give you a better selection of cogs.

I suggest blocking off gears or using a junior cassette for all your training so you'll be used to it.

BTW, as a racer you need to read the rule book.

Yes
You will see two screws
Tighten the one marked H (for high gear) until the derailleur does not allow shifting into the cogs you cannot use.

+1. It will make you a better racer and it won't cost you one penny or one calorie.

Sweet, thanks a bunch
I'll probably use that because I don't have to spend any extra money
I'll save it for a set of wheels

And it's important to note that it's not enough to just check the gear ratios and tire size-- you have to roll it out, and make sure you roll it out to the correct distance as shown in the current rulebook. I've seen *way* too many kids fail rollout because parents or coaches don't check properly.

Junior state tt this year. Everyone besides me failed the pre race rollout. I was shocked at the number of people who forgot to change out their gearing for the race.

Yeah, I was going to do that when I have the time
being a year-round swimmer in high school and biking don't go together as much as I'd like
Oh well, plenty of time in the spring.
