The January Crit Conversation

First crit in two weeks. Master's stuff is 1/2/3/4. Nothing like pushing red line in January racing with a bunch of excitable semi-newbs who have been dreaming of glory and flogging themselves all winter.

I'm trying to talk myself out of it. Unfortunately it's a bit like talking to the wall.

Me: Hey look, there's a race right down the road in a couple of weeks!

Me: It's January. It's a crit. You're fat, slow, and haven't pushed over 400w in the last three months

Me: Yeah, but it would be good motor pacing

Me: No, it won't. All it will be is pain, and you'll try to ride it like you would if you were in shape.

Me: No I won't. Seriously, I'll just sit in.

Me: Yeah right. You'll try to jump in every break that moves, go OTF early, and probably get dropped and not finish.

Me: No no no. Seriously. I'll just sit in.

Me: Have you ever "just sat in"?

Me: Well...

Me: There will be a bunch of shaky Cat 4's in the pack yelling at each other.

Me: How bad could it be?

Me: Bad. There will be yelling and people crashing for no apparent reason.

Me: I'll stay towards the front. It'll be fine.

Me: It will be hideous.

Me: I can really use the miles

Me: You'd be better off doing a tempo ride out the door, then getting back to work on the house.

Me: It's only a few miles down the road. I'll be back early.

Me: No, because you'll want to do at least 3 races. And you'll lay in bed moaning in pain for the rest of the day.

Me: I'll just do the 50+ and 45+

Me: That's half the day right there.

Me: OK, just the 50+.

Me: Thurlow's in the 50+. You think you're just going to sit there if he rides off?

Me: I'll let someone else cha...

Me: Shut up

Me: No, you shut up

Me: No you shut up.

My first crit is at the end of the month.

I'll only be doing two races - I'm skipping the masters crit in the middle. I see no reason to get pummeled by the former pros, 1s and 2s who will be in that field.

The one benefit about this race is that it is on a banked auto race track, so there are no hard corners to accelerate out of - usually ends up being a hard tempo ride with small accelerations here and there and one big sprint. I can just sit in and hope I don't get taken out in a crash.

Remember that January crit you did last year? I don't recall you "sitting in." Just go do it.

Hell, you've got two whole weeks to get into top form. Don't kid yourself about "just sitting in". Two weeks should be plenty of time. Right???

Hi,

Ontario is in 2 weeks and if Thurlow doesn't finish in the money he doesn't eat the following week.

January 15th is way too damn early for the first race of the year. I refuse to do it, even if it's 80F that day (like today). I will, however, be at the Dominguez Hills race the following week (unless it rains) only because I pre-paid for all of the 2012 CBR races. I plan to do Poor College Kids the week after that as I build up for Valley of the Sun. All of this is predicated on my putting my race bike back together and gluing new tires on to my race wheels.

Seriously, this start the SoCal season in January is getting ridiculous. I may have posted this already, but I'm predicting the 2013 season will start in December 2012.

Quit complaining! We don't have much to look forward to in the Northeast for a few months!

If you see a guy in a black, blue and orange Spy kit on a black Soul (David) come say hi.

Added in edit: Although I might be on a team loaner Blue AC1 by then.

I'll be at Ontario and DH.

I agree that it is too early to race and like the rest of the field, I will be in much better shape in a few months.

For me these races are about checking out the field/catching up with old competitors, helping out teammates who want to win the series, and training.

In many ways it will be a much more relaxing race for me than the same crits will be in a few months when I'll be racing more seriously and expecting results.

Indeed it was.

The first crit of my season is literally a mile from my house. I ride by the course every day. I tell myself that if I get OTB'ed, I can just peel off and ride home and no one will be the wiser. "Oh me? Nah, I was out for a tempo ride. That must have been Steve you saw get spit out the back."

meh…I doubt I'll do DH or Ontario…Having the vasectomy killed any form I might have had, pretty sure i'd get dropped just trying to sit in.

too far and too much just to see if I can even sit in.
