I was wondering if she would write to me once she was out here, I could hook her up with some fast women who could show her some of the local hammerfests.

I never got into cx. Always hurts too much and that running is bull****.

I did a cx race today on my mtb. got 5th/40ish. It hurt worse than race I think I've ever done. Only 50 minutes too.

FYI 90F and sunny here in Houston today.. It's not winter yet.

i hope they are focused on that. as it is out here, racing is not growing. the biggest categories are the older riders; there are comparatively few younger riders getting introduced to and hooked on the sport.

honest question: is the worry more 2s or more 1s? would pros really care about some guys who needed years to upgrade from 3 to 2 taking away their bread & butter?

i like the purity of the old rules (just so no one can say 'in my day...'), but where i live racing 1-2x/weekend is not possible, which makes upgrading to 2 or 1 more reasonable (and doesn't imply someone gaming the system).

our "local" p12 fields are pretty small. more riders would be a good thing here.

This may force more Bissell-type tactics in the NCC crits, which isn't good for racing. On the other hand, it should grow the size of the P/1 and P/1/2 fields, harkening back to when I raced in the 80's in fields of 150-200 riders. That makes things exciting.

One of the things I thought that I would never be able to do before I retire from racing is upgrade to Cat1. Now I have a real chance to do that if I play my cards right. I'm halfway there.[/QUOTE]

It would make the pots bigger too. So the guys that actually 'deserve' to be 1's will win and get more money. Everyone's happy.

It's been my experience that unless there's an external requirement that a promoter pays "X" % of the entry fee back, the large races often pay less (or nothing). My best payouts have been smaller races where the promoter uses the purse to draw racers.

I made a couple grand racing in the outlands of Oklahoma, and got a medal at Sea Otter.

1's. I was referring specifically to the NCC races and the P/1 fields. USAC has a $15K minimum payout for those fields for men and a $7.5K minimum payout for women. You can't hold an NCC race without that guarantee. So while the domestic pros are all trying to get to Continental or better, they still have to make a living beyond the meager wages they are paid by their sponsor. NCC races are their bread and butter. It's not unusual to be able to rake in $5K in one race. So if there are more Cat1's in their field, who may or may not be trying to feed themselves by racing, then that may change the racing. That's all I'm saying.

I just checked on the USAC website and couldn't find anything for 2013. Are the changes posted anywhere aside from folks having meetings with their regional coordinators?

I got this email from USAC:

Dear USA Cycling Member:
Beginning in 2013, USA Cycling will enact the following changes as it relates to upgrades to road and cyclo-cross licenses.
Cyclo-cross upgrades
The Cyclo-cross upgrade section was rewritten to more closely match the road. There are two ways to upgrade, voluntary and mandatory. The number of points is now given for each of the mandatory upgrades. Please note that junior women are exempt from a mandatory upgrade to Category 2
Cyclo-cross riders must upgrade from Category 4 to Category 3 after either competing in 10 qualifying races or accruing 10 points.
Category 3 riders may upgrade to Category 2 with 10 points. Amassing 15 points or two wins in a field of at least 30 competitors is a mandatory upgrade.
Category 2 riders may upgrade to Category 1 voluntarily with 20 points. Category 2 riders receive a mandatory upgrade after amassing either 25 points or two wins in a field of at least 40 competitors.
Road Upgrades
The 12-month window for accruing points for road upgrades has been removed for all categories. This rule goes into effect in 2013, so 2012 points will roll forward into 2013. However, this will not be used retroactively to years prior to 2012. Juniors are no longer forced to upgrade to either Category 2 or Category 1, even if they have accrued the mandatory upgrade points. They may upgrade if they choose, but such an upgrade will not be forced.
There are four ways a rider can upgrade from Category 4 to Category 3. A rider can accumulate 20 points, compete in 25 qualifying races with at least 10 top-10 finishes in fields of at least 30 riders or 20 pack finishes in fields of at least 50 riders. The fourth way a rider can upgrade would be to amass 30 points in a 12-month period for a mandatory upgrade.
For Category 3 to 2 road upgrades, riders must accrue 30 points instead of 25. 40 points in a 12-month period is still a mandatory upgrade.
For Category 2 to 1 road upgrades, riders may upgrade once they have accrued 35 points. 50 points in a 12 month period is a mandatory upgrade. Note that only 10 points from training series or masters’ races may be used for upgrading.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact USA Cycling's Membership Department at membership@usacycling.org.
Sincerely,
USA Cycling

Wow- I thought they were extending the window to 18 or 36mo, not removing it entirely; that's pretty surprising. Thanks for posting the email.

Everyone who holds a USAC license is beholden to the UCI. This goes beyond the 217.

I wish him the best of luck, but I think he's burned too many bridges to pull this off.

I agree with Lemond's desire for change at the UCI. But Lemond would be an unmitigated disaster as UCI president. He's shown no ability to work with other people, and to my knowledge has no orginzational skills for such a job.

Lemond may be able to help stir the pot to rally support for changes at the UCI, but Lemond is not the change that's needed.
