9 speed stuff can be just as good as 10 speed. Here's a $145 example from a simple Ebay search in the "shifters" section:

search string: 9 -braze -ergo -campagnolo -campy -sora -"flat bar" -"bar end" -trigger

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ultegra-9-sp...item2c69a98ce4

I saw some Microshift brand also which I've heard is pretty good. Your crankset is fine. I think you need to match the shifter to the crank ie, double or triple.
You could also switch to 10 speed shifters and just get a 10 speed cassette and chain. Total $200 - $250 if you shop around.

I spent this morning doing some research on track racing. I've never ridden at the track, but I did a 1 minute test yesterday and ended up at 9.6 w/kg. That got me thinking that I should consider it, but I have no idea if a small rider can do well in track events.

I know two smaller guys who did very well; one was an Olympic alternate.

Boo.

On disk brakes - I was thinking that initially but it seems very obvious in a crime type area.

I was thinking of buying a bike just for a trip, i.e. buy the bike in the destination, leave it there, and use it whenever. After lots and lots of CL looking I decided to either not buy a bike or if I do I'll ship my current (mountain) bike over and buy a nicer mtb for home. Reminds me I should check CL again.

9s cassette bodies are compatible with 10s (someone chime in here if that's not true but I think it is, based on me putting a 10s cassette on an old TriSpoke).

Microshift shifters work real well, based on one Cat 1's feedback. He's a former bronze medalist at the Elite National RR so about as strong a rider as you'll see around here. He's gained a bit of weight (bit = 100 lbs?) but is still ferociously strong. He's had his Microshift drivetrain for 2 years now.

Cranks/chainrings really don't matter much. 9s, 10s, to me they're pretty much compatible. I use Campy though so a Shimano person may pipe up and say that I'm way off base. The teeth are the same, meaning a 10s chain drops onto a 9s chainring fine. It's how far apart the chainrings sit that's a different story.

thinking about getting one either a BD mercier kilo wt or a moto fantom uno.

both will require some modifications (i.e. saddle, possible bars...). leaning towards the latter.

thoughts? bd jabs?
I'd go with the Moto. If riding in Bogota is as challenging as riding in Quito then get the cheapest bike you can. Have you done any riding outside the city? I couldn't stand riding in Quito because between the cobblestone streets, madmen taxis, and cut throat buses I was lucky I didn't become road kill. Riding outside of the city was fun but the drivers were maniacs.

which is precisely why i'm looking at BD.

yep. some beautiful countryside, once you find it.

but that either involves getting a ride with the father of a friend, then spending as much time in a car as on the bike.

other than that, i go out by myself, but then i spend 35km riding on a highway.

the cobblestones are downtown, so i don't see those so often, but yep the taxi & bus drivers are also borderline homicidal.

scratch the "borderline" when it comes to the taxi drivers: half of them are decommissioned paramilitaries.

Mass start stuff. They both were sprinters.

With your aerodynamics and racing smarts you'd have fun racing omniums, the 3 race format always has opportunities for tactics to trump HP. You'd also be a good pursuit rider; that's all about pacing and aerodynamics.

as a spectator, the 'miss and out' looked fun...

I dont know that Id be any good in a pursuit, but the mass starts interest me as well. Next year I hope to take some classes and learn track etiquette to start.

Thanks, perhaps it's time to get a track bike and give it a shot in 2013. There is a dev class 12/1 in Frisco I might be able to attend.

Edit- BTW, I finished up a 5 min test yesterday (coach has me doing a week of testing before we start on 2013) and here is what I mean by my profile resembling a Pursuit profile.

I've spent a little time experimenting but never an effort. A very good friend of mine is multiple time world champ on the track and has encouraged me to do it and would put me in contact with some people in the know.
My USAC contact laughed at me and told me I would start as a 5.

Personally i took the class and picked it up around august or so, right near the end of the season.
I liked it so much that I built up a track bike! I plan on primarily racing track next year (small-time ATRA stuff) and only doing local road events. It's absolutely cheaper and safer, better environment, and at least as much fun as crits are.

Also at 5'9" and 145-150lbs im on the small side for track riders as well.

Also Also: Points race FTW.

5'8 132 here. Would I need 2 bikes? 1 for the Pursuit and one for other events? Or can you just swap out the cockpit? Just read a small blurb on points racing that sounds fun.

Very similar power profile to me, except everything is about a cat notch above you (minus the sprint, which is in low cat 5 territory ). Makes me a solid contender in prologue or short TTs. I've also been wanting to do some pursuit on the track. I don't know if I'd be competitive in the other stuff, but at least would be fun. I may pick up a track bike next summer since a velodrome is only about 10 miles from where I live.

Yeah honestly im a newbie at the track myself, as previously mentioned. Methinks that as long as you had a frame (w interchangeable post, stem N bars) that was a nice medium between the two riding positions that it would be just fine. I also know little to nothing about pursuit/TT positions.

I think RacerX could give you some good advice here.

Track is definitely a blast. I only picked it up here at the end of the season, but it's a lot of fun. With the smaller fields, I've been on the podium, and in the money a few times. Smaller tight knit group of folks racing track here too. It's fun.

It takes an hour or three to import a clip into iMovie. I usually start an import and let it roll. At some point later I check to see if it's done. For the last couple weeks I've started the import of clips into existing events, i.e. I have 2 clips for a race, one is max length (3.94 GB) the second is shorter (900 MB as an example). If I try and import both at once I only get the smaller clip. If I try to add the longer clip it fails with no error messages. I can't find it on the drive but there is space taken up by something. This is frustrating as I want to work on clips but if the clip isn't in iMovie I can't work on it.
