hopefully you're luckier than me and won't require 6 weeks in a damn sling!

Ah the sling. That thing is annoying. I like to extend my arm more often than once a week. I was just starting to feel comfortable without wearing it. Oh well

I did a 50 mile mtb event, that was treated like a race, on a rigid ss 29er once. The bike went up for sale on craigslist the next day.

Did a CX ride today. Took the tubular wheels. Holy crap are they garbage - just got them trued and just riding trails was enough to knock the back wheel out of true again. Velocity Major Toms are just crap, even in a 32-spoke wheel under a 125lb person they won't stay true. Pissed. I want to replace these wheels but really can't afford to.

are you sure your scale isn't weighing you in kilos? You've been looking a bit chunky the past couple of weeks.

Was debating racing at Limerock tomorrow. Tiny pre-reg fields (14 in M40, 16 in Cat 3s), thundershowers expected (last year was horrendous), 3+ hours in the car, plus 2-3 hours at the race. Even that would make it iffy, the time + small fields + weather forecast.
Then this morning Junior woke up with a 101-102 deg fever (forehead). It spiked to as high as 103.8, 102.x armpit (which apparently reads normally 1 deg lower than forehead scanner thing), now 102.8 forehead, 101.5 armpit. Respiration 40 breaths a minute, it was much higher earlier but we didn't measure it (this is the first time the doc asked us to do so). I'm guessing it was 50-ish, definitely below 60 (1 breath a second), but much faster than 40.
Plus I'm totally wiped out for no reason. Two naps during the day, about 1.5-2 hours each, and still felt really fatigued when I woke up the second time at 5:30 PM or so.
Conclusion? No race tomorrow.

I was really looking forward to racing tomorrow! (Same race as CDR.) Currently sitting in the ER @ 3am with my 10 year old, who fell out of his bunkbed and broke his leg, spiral fracture of tibia and fibula. Poor guy is in a lot of pain and this is a busy urban ER (Kingston NY).

Wow that's rough guys.
I had really wanted to do Limerock, but prereg is abysmal, and as CDR pointed out T-storms are forecast for race time. Just can't justify leaving the mountains to go do it. I'm going to try and beat the rain and get a whiteface ride in, and then we're going to go sit by the side of the road and watch the ironman.

I had a blast working my first race as a blue shirt at Tour of the Hilltowns. Did line inspection for the M50+ start amidst a lot of good natured ribbing. Was a judge at the line for the rest of the morning. I'm getting better but I have to work on target fixation after getting the first four or five numbers. It will come with more practice. Spent the afternoon in the pro pace car giving splits to the follow car. Two guys were OTF for 1:32 only to get caught at the 1km sign. After that I did Junior rollouts for the Cat3 and Cat4 fields, each of which was won by a Junior.
The new course is punishing, a classic New England road race. No mountain climbs, but plenty of climbing in short steep and long grinds to cause separation in the first few miles. Very tough and demanding.

Rode in the local mountains with a small group and the legs actually woke up for a while after a couple hours of climbing, but I still couldn't keep up with Carrie, who, fresh from 2 weeks in the Dolomites, smoked everyone.
Saw a friend I haven't seen for a long time and he is so skinny I hardly recognized him. He said training and racing 45+ made him drop weight. It was great catching up on stories about mutual friends.
On the way back down we stopped to gorge on french fries at the only cafe up there and I saw another friend who was running a week long clinic for some juniors, starting at that cafe and riding the mountain roads for days.
Also saw some other old friends going the other direction while riding.
Cycling is a small world, even near a massive population like L.A.

Pretty sure this is going to need plating:
Came home from the hospital at 5am to find the cat had peed on the kids' bed and the sofa. And our washing machine exploded yesterday.
Feels a little like the wheels are falling off...

Poor kid. Good thing is that kids heal fast.
What's up with the cat acting up?
When our washing machine quit, I was shocked at how much some of the things cost these days. Found a basic one on sale at Lowe's for a few hundred.

I fell out of my bunk bed in college, but I didn't break anything except for the desk I crashed into. That was a rough night.

Well, to explain myself, you're more likely to find pedal-y descents in a cyclocross race, where being willing or able to keep the power on for longer will get you around the course faster. That's less common on a singletrack trail, rather than a grassy field or park or something where 'cross races tend to happen. Is it a huge difference, no, but there are lots of places in 'cross races I've done where not being able to keep your speed up downhill means getting gapped out of your group. If you're a fantastic bike handler, you can maybe make those gaps up, but it's better not to give yourself the extra work.
