At our little monthly company meeting, my boss gets up and says he wants to announce a promotion, and says that I have been doing a great job and have been promoted from "senior xyz" to "slightly more senior xyz", and I will get a free soda every week .... "April Fools"

yuk yuk ...... I knew he might do it, but I think a couple people thought it was a real promotion .....

My boss/coworker, the founder of the co., announced on our user forum that he was quitting to raise llamas.

Mostly it was the european users who got suckered in...

Did not enjoy the trip back with 30+ hours of traveling, after missing my flight because of a subway construction in London, and delays in Newark because of weather, which landed me with STILL no luggage.

Unfortunately I broke up with my girlfriend. She's studying abroad in England and the reason I went over there in the first place. I mentioned some of my concerns with the relationship in this thread before I think, I won't bring them up again in detail, but basically maturity, long distance, places in life, etc. But pretty much during the trip I decided even though I loved her and wished things would work, I needed to move on. So I ended things. She is completely destroyed (timing was obviously not great with trip and I'm not sure she ever thought I'd really do it), and I'm not doing much better, actually quite torn up and feeling really guilty. But I know it was the right thing to do, just really is gonna suck for a bit.
Bummer, man. But probably the right move given how you've been feeling. Sticking by something and trying to make it work when you're clearly pulling in different directions is seldom the smart choice, and waiting for the situation to change means paying some serious opportunity cost on better times that could be had. Good luck! And hang tough.

One year, my PhD advisor said he was quitting our university to take a position as the department chair at the University of North Dakota and it was looking like we'd either have to move with him or start over with someone at our current university. We all bought it for about 10-15 minutes of panic.

I would have given you a heads up, but i was only in town for 2 days, and i spent almost the entire time at Georgetown. Plus i wouldn't have been much fun, i was jetlagged and tired of traveling.

I work with students in k-3rd grade. My morning was spent pretending to fall for jokes such as "there's a spider on your head" and "it's my birthday, can I have a homework pass?".
I'm glad to be home!

The Redlands Bicycle Classic is this weekend, and living on the Queen Stage, I've seen about 6 team cars go by. Canyon Bikes - Shimano got up close and personal to my dalmation during our walk . A few of our neighbors are hosting athletes as well (we discussed it but our guest bathroom is atrocious).

Its going to be a fun weekend to be a spectator.

You should have told them the office called and his or her parents had died.

One of the advantages of being retired from the US military is that you get health insurance for life. The downside of that is that doctors are reimbursed at the same rates as Medicare, so a lot of doctors don't accept the insurance and some of those who do are less than sterling practitioners.

I broke my collarbone last Saturday at a race, and first thing Monday morning found out which ortho guys accepted Tricare and called for an appointment. I was told they'd get back with me when they checked their schedule. No call back yesterday, so I called this morning and the receptionist said she'd check with the doc again. I called back at 4:30 and she had no answer - not her fault, she just answers the phone, so I couldn't get mad at her. I'll call again in the morning, and if no answer, I've already got the phone number of another doc.

How effin' hard can it be to check a schedule and get back to someone? If the office operates at such a low standard, I'm not sure I want that guy cutting on me anyway.

You can fix that. Show your wife you still care. Do something spontaneous and unexpected for her. Don't take her for granted.

It doesn't have to be big. I picked a bouquet of wild flowers for my wife two weekends ago on my way home.

Shoes are expensive! Which is sad, because the only shoes I have that are suitable for traveling outdoors in winter other than my Zamberlans (which are serious overkill for walking/riding my junker bike around Boston) are ATROCIOUS.

Tell you what, next time I find myself with some money to burn on accessories, you can take me shoe shopping.

My friend who drives too fast on snow and ice had spun out and got his car stuck in a ditch. When the school bus carrying his 10 year old daughter went by she saw the car but not her dad. One of the other little monsters told her her dad was dead. She had a tough day at school.

I echo this, it doesn't have to be anything expensive or crazy, just spontaneous and the fact that you thought of them goes a long way.

If you do want to spend a little money, I highly recommend a staycation or even a night in a fancy hotel with a nice dinner out away from home.
