during an ftp test, like today, the disparity between my 5 min peak and 20 min power is like 6 watts.

dunno. I'd think with a nearly 50 watt swing of 5 min vs final power that one might be giving some points away due to digging too deep.

Typically a 5 minute power should be about 120-130% of 20 minute power. If it's less than 120% that sometimes means 5' was held back a little, maybe in order to achieve a better 20 minute but not always the case.

An all out 5 minute effort is what helps better establish using 95% of 20' power to get FTP. Of you hold back the 5 minute effort you may overstate ftp by 15-20%. This is obviously using Hunter Allen's testing protocol. Although everyone is different so 95% of 20' does not always give accurate FTP

Tomorrow morning I will get back on the rollers for my first spin post-vasectomy. Going a bit crazy being off the bike for so long, but recovery is coming along well and this time off is part of my annual training plan.

I rode in the rain this morning. It sucked, but it's worth the effort to increase my FTHFTU

Be very, very careful and don't overdo it. Your nads could end up like grapefruit.

I was nervous for a bit, but it looks like I'm back and injury-free again. Clavicle is healed, and my knee problem seems sorted out. So I'm planning more-or-less on a "reset" season this year. Throw away as many assumptions as possible about what I know I can do. Make a big push on my biggest weaknesses, endurance and recovery. Which will eventually mean lots of time in the saddle for me. Try everything. I want to give longer road races another shot. It's never too late to learn something new, and big miles isn't something I've ever really done. So I'd like to try going bigger than I have in the past.

Woke up at 5 this morning for my normal morning ride, but since it was raining cats & dogs & stuff I went back to sleep. Instead I left work early today and went out for an afternoon ride, when it was at least just drizzling. At least at first, eventually it was pouring.

Since it was only a ~2 hour ride I rode tempo+, just tried to generally go hard.

Rode with some guy for a while, but he (wisely) saw the rain coming and turned back.

Just throwing that out there, for all you Cali swine.

when you test, do you do a 5' max and then a 20' max, or are you talking about the 5' peak from your 20' test?

there are lots of protocols, but i would agree that a 5' peak that is significantly higher than the AP from a 20' test is a sign that a rider did not deplete his/her anaerobic system before the test and that vo2+ is making up a significant component of that 20' power.

for such a rider i'd expect that 20' test to overestimate threshold.

seemed like @ShutUpLegs was doing a 5' max followed by a 20' max, and if so the disparity isn't too surprising.

The rain was brutal today, my Jeep actually slid a few feet after taking a turn too fast. First real rain out here that's not a drizzle.

Trainer Session for two hours while watching TV, Low Cadence mashers on commercial breaks focusing on glute engagement. Probably would have been easier had I gone out and rode.

i think g is referring to his peak 5' power WITHIN the 20' test whereas shutuplegs was reporting numbers from a 5' peak test and a 20' peak test as two separate intervals.

Spun for about a half hour on the rollers, sure felt good to be back on the bike. Nads the same size as pre-op. I expect by next week I will be back to base!

1:45 on the trainer last night. I may do some track racing on Sunday - all timed events. I thought it would be a good idea to sharpen the knife a little more. I did a Velo Sports Center Roger's session simulation on the trainer and instead of a motor game, I tacked on one of the Russian trainer workouts I was doing last year.

I only follow 12 people on strava and it's mostly cat 4's that I raced with and are friendly with - a few of them woke up at 5:30 and rode in the rainy, 38 degree weather. I'm clearly not as motivated as them, and I'm fine with that.

Commuting 21 miles one way with some effort after latching on a 5 man commute gang. I've realized that most commuters who don't even race are strong.
