Easy day spinning at about 120rpm on average for 40 minutes.

furiousferret 07-25-15 03:52 PM

An hour at mid Tempo (80%) in the heat (95-105), then noodled home. Pretty weaksauce numbers compared to what you guys put up so I wont post em.

I've been seriously training for racing for about 20 months now....seems like a lot longer...that is nowhere near enough of a sample size to understand the most effective way to train. One thing I did figure out that my FTP is the strongest when I do hard hour+ efforts.....2x20's etc are okay but the hour seems to best for me. My logic before was 'I only race for 30-40 minutes, so there is no reason to go hard over an hour....' In the past I'd do a 4 hour ride with a few 20 minute efforts, some sprints, etc and just noodle for the other 60%. That logic is going to have to change.

JAM Grand Fundo, 68 miles, 6350 feet. A lot of this ride is on dirt. I put the compact on with the Stages, which performed just fine. I had a flat about 90 minutes in which took me out of the front group. Two hours in my legs started cramping, probably because I'm not comfortable taking a hand off the bars to drink on sketchy dirt roads. Pickles and NUUN at the next rest stop cleared everything up and I was good to go from that point on.

Sounds like you're not missing that hardware much.

Out of curiosity (ultimately my question is vis a vis the Stages), how many miles do you ride a year? How long is a typical ride for you? I know this year is an anomaly, but say in the timeframe that you've had the Stages.

Both of mine have been sent back to Stages, they are going to take another stab at figuring it out. But I'm not too optimistic.

TexMac 07-25-15 08:20 PM

Went hill hunting..2800 ft 66 miles

I do about 6,000-7,000 miles per year, including trainer, training, and racing. Most of it is with the standard SRM. The Stages is a compact crank that I keep on my rain bike. I can swap it out easily since both are BB30.

I've probably ridden 500-800 miles on the Stages. I bought it used. The battery door was replaced after flooding out.

Is 60+ miles a common distance for you?

Felt good today but hit a car pretty hard 2 blocks from home. Got checked out and just scrapes/bruises but pretty bummed out about the whole thing. At least the pain meds make you not give a ****.

Niiice. I saw some great photos from the ride and the party afterward.

I'm not sure what you're getting at, but the answer, not being snarky, is "it depends". During base season, up to 100 or so is common, but I don't train by miles, I train by time. During race training season, I may ride the Stages when the roads are crappy, 1-2 hours at a time. Workouts are 60-90 minutes each and focus on intensity. That's when it gets tested. During race season, I don't ride it much at all as I'm doing hard workouts, recovery rides, and race preparation. I do a few road races that are 60+ miles, but I don't ride the Stages. In injury recovery mode, I usually do one long ride on the weekend of over 60 miles and a few one hour or so rides during the week. It's just base miles, not even base training. Those I do on the SRM as well.

We have the same coach. It's OK by me if you ask him about how he works with me. You can also PM me if you'd like to follow me on Strava. I mark all my rides with "Stages" if I'm using it.

Duke of Kent 07-26-15 09:23 AM

40 miles, 5000ft climbing on the MTB...on the road. The vast majority of it was a single 900m, 17km climb. My road bike's front hub is on the fritz, so it's all MTB, all the time until I rebuild the front wheel.

315w for the first half of it, up to a bit more than 2,000m. Then I lost motivation and started taking pictures. There's a lull in the climb, when you hit a mountain valley that cuts across the canyon about 2/3rds of the way up, as the road dips down and flattens out for a bit. Topped out at 2500m, then it bombs down into the Roosevelt National Forest. In theory, you could access the northern reaches of Rocky Mountain National Park via the dirt roads that branch off as well. The last 2km or so are really steep, with a couple of nasty switchbacks.

Edit: It was 99 degrees when I started. Had I been on the road bike, the additional cooling from higher speeds might have resulted in higher morale. That **** sucked.

I appreciate the offer but I avg'd 7w/kg during tempo so I think it's working.

mike868y 07-26-15 02:28 PM

yesterday - 5 hours with some hard tempo/thresshold efforts
today - 4 hours on the cross bike in the woods.

need to rest this week.

wens 07-26-15 02:50 PM

I killed two stages in nine months by breaking the battery door tabs, I bought a quarq and I'm selling the warranty replacement. Sixty mile rides, shrug, a couple a month? I'm a sprinter for road races and sprinty all rounder for crits on the large side for a bike racer, so if you're thinking cycle fatigue problems, I'm probably harsher than you on it. If you're thinking ride duration, I think I've ridden over five hours once in my life and nothing over four on my stages.

hubcyclist 07-26-15 02:56 PM

Did a bit of a hill ride today, did pretty well at staying around 300w for 3mins on several hills (at least according to segments), which is top of my vo2 range. So all in all a terrible way to spend a Sunday lol actually a good workout always leaves me a bit energized

Wylde06 07-26-15 03:55 PM

5 hours today. Breakfast ride this morning, took my turn at the front and put some good efforts in. Coming into the sprint it was just me and one other guy..ran out of gears and couldnt get around him. After breakfast, again took my turn at the front and put some more good efforts in..coming into the sprint on this half of the ride was in a pretty good headwind..same guy from this morning took off, jumped on his wheel and tried to get around him..not sure who took that sprint. It was too close to tell. I felt really good this morning, hopefully I can bring some of that into the 2 crits next weekend.

Haven't you done lengthy rides at around 250ap? How can 300w for 3' be top of your vo2 range?

-----

I got older today 😀 3 hours at an easier pace than I wanted, but, being social trumped everything. I was in my 53-25 for the first 2.5 hours. On a slight downhill, I decided to channel my inner Froome and spun it up super vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. I pulled a muscle or two in my back 😎. Nice ride though. I'm getting faster, hee hee hee.

My ftp is like 247 and according to a zone calculator 300 is the upper end of zone 5, which I admittedly have not focused on working at that level.

carpediemracing 07-26-15 09:50 PM

4x5m because I feel the need + 1 sprint because.

256w, 256w, 256w, 259w, in that order. Apparently I'm a bit more consistent than I thought. Tried to keep it between 250w and 260w, based on 217-248w spring range when doing intervals in March/April.

Sprint just because, legs were pretty fried from the 4x5 but manage to do about 850w for 23s, sub-1000w jump. Been having problems dumping the chain to the outside of the big ring only on the trainer so jumping softly and avoiding the 11T.

Felt a bit hot when I finished.
