Riding/training tomorrow.
My training partner is a former pro and cancer survivor, but doesn't wear a yellow bracelet.
We are both way too fat for this sport.

Yeah, I think that % values above VO2Max zones are really only valid for a TT guy (profile sloping up to the right). My VO2Max intervals are well into what should be an AWC zone on most charts. It's good to get familiar with what you can do and work to improve it based on power at the durations. I think the %FTP zones are fine for sub threshold stuff.

This week is shaping up to be an interim between rest and training weeks, mainly because I decided to bail on the SLR road race in favor of going to Gonzaga Bay, Mexico with cousins+fam for fishing, drinking, hiking and off-roading.
Beers will be drank, yellowtail will be caught, peaks will be summit-ed.
This is how it will look:
M - off
T - Upper body lifting at gym AM, EZ spin at lunch, track racing pm
W - Lower body lifting at gym AM, EZ spin at lunch
Th - 2hrs to and from Fiesta Island Worlds
F-M: Mexico!

Installed the garmin 500 with cadence last night, now my bike for some reason is making a slight metal on metal grinding sound when pedaling; not sure what it could be from. Maybe the chain needs lubing? Now to figure out how to train with a HR monitor.

I doubt there's a connection between having installed the Garmin and the grinding sound. Whatever's grinding was probably grinding before, you just hadn't noticed it. Get that checked out ASAP.
As for training with heart rate, UTFG. If you'd prefer a book, I'd go with The Time-Crunched Cyclist by Chris Carmichael. A lot of folks don't want anything to do with Carmichael due to his apparent link to doping and and his link to Armstrong in the past, but his is still the best beginning book on training.

Actually, he's a Dane. I wouldn't have known if it weren't for Google.
I didn't find anything where he referred to recovery rides as junk miles. The closest I found was this (from here):
It's a reference in one of his training materials. I'm open to sharing if you are interested.
I can see how one might infer from this that all non-interval training = junk miles, but that doesn't hold up in the context of the rest of his writing. I found several mentions of active recovery in his other pieces. He's pretty much mainstream.

trainer this morning, SST hard rotations with a teammate at lunch. Legs felt like crap when I got on the road today, but they responded when pushed.
yowch. Funny how differently you start viewing :29 vs. :59.

Yeah, they aren't fun, but damn do they make you fast. I actually surprisingly did pretty well tonight even though i had pretty tired legs from the past couple of days training (excluding monday obviously). Also the more time crunched i am, the more i realized how fast someone can get on low hours. An hour a day is actually a lot in terms of intervals. I finished the main set in an hour and 10 minutes.

Same here. Actually mine was only 1:27 at 0.843 IF
Also rode with my wife to show her the best way to get to her yoga teacher training by bike. 53' moving, 0.384 IF
When we were almost home she surprised me by suddenly rolling away from me, causing me to hit 500 watts just to keep up (for like 5 seconds). Good leadout, but I dialed it up to 1000 and won the sprint!

3332' of elevation gain in 2 hours this evening. 142 TSS. Felt good. Too bad I'm way to fat to ever climb competitively.

Ez ride today and Yoga. I complained to the Yoga instructor that my hips were tight. She told me that the hips hold onto all of our emotional baggage and craziness. Which left me wondering if my hips were tight from cycling or from being crazy? In any case, I feel better after the class!

My wife does this to me all the time, and my kids do too. I think just about anyone has the anaerobic capacity to put out some perfectly respectable numbers for 10 seconds or so.
