I rode my bike yesterday. My HR was off the charts and I was going slow. Progress!

Doing easy leg spinning on a stationary several times a week. Mentally, it feels great.

Social group ride today, 75 miles, 6000 ft, 200 TSS. Start out with 20' threshold on a hill a few miles in, then lots more miles, with a few shorter threshold hill efforts stuck in there that really hurt after so much riding. Ran into a crack and tore a sidewall a bit. Another rider had a boot for it so I didn't get to try out the dollar bill trick. Also one of the guys on the ride recently got 3rd place in 45-49 age group (36th overall) in Ironman Coeur d'Alene. This guy is strong and just keeps going and going like the energizer bunny.

Training crit, stayed in for most of it and then my calf locked up and I stayed off for 2 laps. Jumped on for the last lap and pounced on a break that got swallowed up a block before the finish. I'm surfing wheels better now and it shows in the power numbers, which are really low. My burst power numbers are getting higher, which is helping close gaps much quicker.

Sac River Ride.

Fun and fast, but had a contact lens float out due to excessive sweat pooling in my eyes. Never had that happen before and my depth perception dropped to zero. Had to pull out and sit off the back for the last mile or two as I couldn't see well enough to be safe.

More pedaling.

Gained about 25w at threshold so far this week, even on a caloric deficit. Yay for muscle memory newb gains after a break.

? don't you train like 15+ hours a week as a cat 4? You should be seeing huge growth due to relative newness to the sport.

My FTP didn't change my first 1.5 years racing. Didn't go up, didn't go down. I just rode lots of upper z2/lower z3 and raced. Was still able to get to cat3 though. It wasn't until I got a coach that my ftp started and continued upward.

^my ftp rarely changes much even in the off season, but all of my short term/and super long term numbers change, and how i can use them (and when) changes. But to not see any real improvement since the start of your racing career is weird. I have had a 70 watt improvement (with like 65 of those watts in the span of a year).

Are you using those contacts where one eye is distance the other close up ? Had those once, absolutely the worst idea for any type of hand eye coordination. In Tennis it was horrible, for cycling it's even worse.
Appt. tomorrow for new contacts.

Just as long as you don't ride into an irrigation canal.

Well, I had a 75 watt improvement in 5' power, and a couple hundred watts in 1' power.

These are just standard contacts, but my left eye uses a toric version to correct for astigmatism. The problem is that the vision is so blurred without them, my non lensed eye wasn't able to focus on anything to really sense depth. So, not quite as bad as riding with one eye closed, but pretty close and to the point where I'd hate to have misjudged depth and taken people out.

Or hit one of the super craters out there. The new paved sections are nice, but some of the older sections are still pretty rough.

Surprising that you haven't had any real growth in long term power even though you are new to the sport.
