River Gorge RR P12 - 42/~75
- Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/77277533
- Did this race last year so sorta knew what to expect (though last year I was a 3, this year in the P12). Lots of climbing. Deceptive to think there are only two climbs in the race because of profile, but there is tons of climbing in between. Same as last year, where I popped on the middle climb (sand mtn). I was perfectly positioned in the top 5 hitting the climb. Hung for about 5 mins then popped off. I probably should have paced myself more rather than trying to hang with the leaders. Because I fell completely apart by the end and lost a lot of time in the last 2-3 mins of the climb. Got together with a good size group and we rode pretty hard to the final climb, while picking up lots of stragglers popping off the lead group on the rollers. Hit the final climb and finished probably like 5th from our little group. Super high HR and RPE for the watts I put down on that final climb, was definitely fatigued from the earlier climbing. Definitely a super painful race.
Important part is this is a huge improvement over a month ago where I was getting shelled left and right on flattish/roller RR. Yes, I still got dropped, but there was a pretty solid field and extremely difficult course, and almost half the field was behind me, and this was the third week of a training block. So I'll take it!
River Gorge TT P12 - 13/25 (5th Cat2)
- Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/77277515
- I liked this course last year, so was hoping for a good ride. I only cut 4 seconds off my time from last year. Did 20w more average, and had carbon 50mm wheels vs 30mm wheels last year and had a better skinsuit compared to last year. So that was kind of a bummer. But I did do the RR earlier in the day (though I still hit the watts I wanted to hit). And I would have won the TT in the Cat3's if I was still a Cat3. And I missed out on Cat2 payout by only 10 seconds. So all in all a solid time trial.

I wasn't overly concerned with getting dropped by the main group, but I really wanted to hang with the lead group over Sand Mountain. I made sure I was top 10 going into the climb and concentrated on hanging onto the guys wheel in front of me. When I would look back I could tell the field was exploding and I was very happy to make it to the top with a group of about 10 guys. We picked up two more from a break of three that formed early in the race and after the descent a couple more guys caught us, making our group about 15. There was one rider solo off the front and he kept putting time on us at every check. He ended up having a 2.5 minute lead going into the last climb. Someone told me later he was from Belgium and had been training there all summer. I did my share at the front as we made our way to the final climb. I was able to hang on until about half way up and shortly after that the rest of the group shattered. I couldn't catch the solo guy in front of me but I also had a big gap on the next guy behind me. I finished 11th overall (10th out of the main group). I was very happy with the result and gives me a lot of motivation going into the off season.

Vacaville, CCCX, and that TT meant that only people who like CCCX went there. Small but strong fields and nowhere to hide. My kind of races.

Huh. My Saturday result is in, too. 12th.
When I win, I overestimate the number of guys behind me.
When I lose, I totally overestimate the number of guys ahead of me.

Unremarkable. I finished 12/65 in a bunch sprint on a narrow center-line-in-effect road. Bumping on both sides and no daylight for the entire last 1k.
The hill was not enough to be selective. Each time we'd get a small selection of 10-15 guys, but only 10-15s (about a 3-minute hill really) and the massive pack would easily pull that back in on the flats. A few teams (squadra, davis, leopard, another 1 or 2) had 5+ guys, but instead of using their team to seed breaks they would all send a guy to the break to cover but not work to propogate it. So a break of 5 became a break of 10 with 5 guys sitting in and just murdering any chance of the break staying away.
Third lap we finally went hard for the duration of the rollers/climb and had about 15 guys with 30 seconds, but we got held up going around a police car on a blind corner who was stopped where someone had face planted. Cop almost killed us and we lost our mojo.
I tried with 2 miles to go. Got a gap of about 20 seconds, but when I was caught it wasn't a small group, it was the whole field strung out single-file.
Overall, pretty damn lame for what could be a fun race. The sourness made Sunday taste even sweeter, I guess.

Came in 15th overall, 4th 30-39 in the Race to the top of Vermont mountain bike hill climb (4.3 miles @ 11.5% or so, best time around 33, mine 41:45). I was bummed I missed top 3 in the 30-39 for the first time all year. Others were road climbs, and I think not riding my mountain bike all year is what did me in. have fun prizes too, some sweet pottery mugs with your place on them. Next year...

The hill was not enough to be selective. Each time we'd get a small selection of 10-15 guys, but only 10-15s (about a 3-minute hill really) and the massive pack would easily pull that back in on the flats. I was just disappointed mainly that the teams seemed to want to slow it down rather than do anything fun, tactically.

Winters: Go over the hill in the lead, go down the hill fast enough to make people crash or sheet their pants, then TT to the finish. Worked for me. But that was a while ago
On Saturday I drank a bunch, ate a bunch, had a nice family fight, barely slept. Did a TT Sunday. I did not get a Caddy. I did not get fired. The guy who beat me is peaking for nationals. I'm valleying, which is the new term I've coined for when you stopped giving a sheet weeks ago. Got a nice beer mug. Ridley got a medal and dogs are colorblind so the gold v. silver issue is moot.

Holy smokes! I just lookes at the Winters results (cat 5) - 18th out of 34. Got dropped so bad in BOTH laps, but apparently 16 guys got dropped worse than me. Haha 18th place makes me happy - I seriously thought I was last place.

+1 would have been easy to drop out on lap 1 -- good fight to go to the finish.
