Why can't homey Time Trial?

Overall I'm a fairly strong rider, hum along pretty well whether solo or in a group. However, TTs are different. For some reason, when I 'm on the clock I step on the gas and there is nothing there. I think it may be brain damage.

what are you basing that on?

how long you been racing? what kinds of TTs (length, course profile) have you raced? do you have any dedicated aero/TT gear? what category are you racing and what kinds of finish place are you seeing? avg speed?

TT is really simple but its also really hard to get good at, and takes lotsa suffering and patience and finesse of preparation and execution.

i dont know anybody who started off as a good time trialist. takes time.

Enough experience over some years (I'll skip the minutia). I just know it's a mental issue. When I say I step on the gas and there's nothing there, I'm not kidding.

Judging by your lack of detail in this post, I'm going to say it's your lack of attention to detail. Call it a hunch.

This is where a power meter really helps. Using it you can identify the problem:

1) You're FTP is too low, you need to get stronger;

2) you can't maintain power for the length of the event, you need to pace better, and/or get mentally tougher;

3) your slow in relation to your power output, you need to get more aero.

Or likely some combination of all 3.

at any point in a time trial, ask yourself "can i sustain my current pace all the way to the line?"

if the answer is yes, youre not going hard enough and youre already boned

if the answer is no, youre going too hard and youre already boned

the only appropirate answer is "maybe?"

This was me at my first TT of the year. Wasn't exactly sure of the watts I could hold this year. I was about 5mins into a 15min TT and I went, CRAP, I could do this all day, I went out too easy! Still ended within 20s off first which isn't too bad all things considered.

me too...but i came to cycling from other endurance sports where every race is basically a time trial, so i'm not sure if that counts. i've had plenty of practice.

i'm skeptical

i believe you guys had the engines. owing to previous endurance exp, but i'm surprised you dont feel like you learned a lot about finesse and technique and position and preparation and gear from experience

Can it also be fast twitch vs slow twitch?

I also suck at TTs (slow twitch), but on the other hand I have a decent sprint/kick (fast twitch), without focusing too much on either. That said I think I could TT better if I focused more on it and trained to suffer for longer than a few minutes at a time.

Different question. I did improve a lot. I also won my first TT.

I have a decent sprint also. There are plenty of riders who could be called "fast twitch" who are also good at TT's.
