First Race Report

Had my first race today, and since I always enjoyed reading others first race reports I figured I would post mine.

The race was around 30 miles (3 and some laps of an 8 mile course.) Roads were wet because of an overnight rain.

I was fairly nervous but had a couple of friends racing (not their first race) which helped me settle a bit. After a few hundred meters it felt just like a fast group ride and I had my first bits of light contact which was good for my experience if i plan to race again. Things really didn't feel fast throughout the first uneventful 2 laps.

One team tried a break (I think) on lap 3 and I went with them but didn't take any pulls. It was me, 2-3 teammates and another solo rider up ahead, but they gave up. Looking back, I was still feeling strong here and I think that I should have attacked off of their break, we weren't far ahead but I think it wouldn't have hurt to try for the experience. Anyway, I ended up staying in the pack up until the sprint when one guy took off and the whole pack (20 guys I would guess, I don't know how many were behind me) surged. I was threaded in the middle a bit and the guy in front of me broke 3 spokes (I have no idea how) and his back wheel went nuts I hit it with my front wheel in the surge and went down pretty hard along with one guy behind me. So now i sit with some pretty gnarly road rash writing this report.

Overall I would say that the race was fun other than the crash, not really sure if I plan to race again as it was a lot of hassle + money for a 30 mile aggressive group ride until the last 200m. We will see!

Thanks.

Also if these shouldn't be posted anymore or it should go in the general race report, I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Congrats! Sorry to hear about the crash. That's bad luck for the first shot out of the gate. Sounds like a fairly boring race otherwise, hence the feeling like a fast group ride. Often times in the 5's you'll get a group of guys who all got the same advice 'stay off the front' and what you end up with is a boring slog followed by a sprint. Trust me, it gets more interesting and challenging down the road. Maybe look for a race with some technical features; hills, corners and so forth.

Climb those golden stairs.

Buncha years ago I did a race on a whim. Yesterday I was chasing down an Olympian.

This sport gets better the further you dive into it.

We all have road rash and scar tissue but I know few people that would go back to the "before" picture.

Congrats on your first race; sorry for the crash - bummer. Keep at it. As Ex said, it gets better.

No inconvenience but post your reports here in the future.

Heal up quick. You did well right up to the crash.

A thought for the future, if you return. While technically sitting on the break was the right thing to do, if you think the rest of the riders were working hard, then it might have been better to work in the break in the beginning to help it succeed. Save the tactics for later.
